Hey folks!! I have a 2022 XLT EB FX4 with 4K tow. I had a 2018 iNTech Flyer Pursue that I towed with my Mav. The girlfriend and I wanted to move up just a tad to something that had a bathroom etc. We opted for a 2020 Lance 1475 S. We have had it out a couple of times and the Mav does Okish, but does seem to struggle at times. The trailer has a sticker in the door jam stating the weight of 3200lbs. We probably have 500lbs max cargo in the trailer. So trailer and gear is like 3700lbs max. I started googling and such and now have created some paranoia after buying the trailer. I also feel nervous being so close to the 4k tow max on the Mav.

On the two shake down trips the first one we got like 16mpg and on the second trip we were at like 10.9mpg. On the second trip it was insanely windy so I am assuming that is what caused the drop in mpg from the first trip. No overheating etc. The temp gauge was rock solid at 4 tick marks on both trips. One thing I did notice is that I could never get the trailer tires to lock-up when setting up the brake controller. So right now I just have it maxed at 10.

Can anyone provide me some feedback to help me get clarity? I almost feel more confused about GVWR, GCWR, tongue weight, etc..... Thanks for reading.

Remember a gallon of water is 8.34 lbs. So depending on your setup your grey/black water and your fresh water tanks might be pushing you WAY over the 4K limit. typical grey/black tank is 50 gallons and the fresh is usually 50 gallons so 100.00 gallons X 8.34 is 834lbs alone; not including your 500lbs of gear.

I should have stated that the TT is always towed with empty tanks. My Lance 1475 only has 26 gallon tanks.

Official towing guide:

https://www.vdm.ford.com/content/da...owing/pdf/2024-Ford-Maverick-Towing-Guide.pdf

You have a GCWR of 8,085lbs as listed in the PDF. That means that the combined weight of your car and the trailer should not exceed that.

- Empty weight of your Maverick is 3,731 lbs.
- Two people are about 400 lbs.
- I assume the car has gear in it too. Say 200 lbs. Though it is likely much more...
- Tonneau cover?
- You said trailer is about 3,700 lbs loaded.

So your total weight will be about 8,031 lbs. You are definitely getting close to the official limit.

You should also check your tongue weight. It is very easy to load your trailer in an unbalanced way and you exceeding the recommend 400lbs max. I recommend to get something like a "Sherline LM1000".

I don't imagine you are doing much in the way of elevation, but if you are you have to discount for that a bit for each 1000' of elevation.. The towing guide will point that out.

You also have to keep the speed down... that will wreck your mileage while towing as well.

Regarding brakes.. Do you feel like the trailer is pushing you forward as you brake hard?

BTW, that is a beautiful setup. Looks like a very comfortble rig to camp in. That sloped front of the Lance is probably helping to cut down on the effects of the exposed frontal area.

No, I don't feel the trailer is "pushing" us at all when slowing down. Thanks for the complement. We are enjoying the Lance.

Ita the frontal area on the camper. Mavericks are rated for 40 square feet. I tow a bunch of different trailers. My tritoon and camper have the most resistance going down the road. Like pulling a parachute. 9.5mpg to 12.0 mpg. When pulling My 17' boat that weights the same the toon and camper but has no frontal are to speak of I double my milage. 22 23 mpg.

It's a small truck with a four cylinder engine. Don't expect it to tow like an F150.

GCVW = the maximum weight of: Truck + Passengers + Payload + Trailer + Water Tanks + Propane Bottles + Batteries. Payload can be distributed across Truck and Trailer but Truck + Passengers + Payload cannot exceed GVWR.

GVWR cannot exceed: Kerb Weight of Truck + Passengers + Truck Payload. It os possible that you can reach GVWR before GCVW. Kerb Weight already includes a full tank of gas.

Kerb Weight cannot be found on any sticker on the Mav. You'll have to google it.

Tongue Weight = the weight the Trailer exerts on the real axles. Tongue Weight must be subtracted from Truck Payload. Any left over Truck Payload capacity can be distributed in the Trailer as long as you don't exceed the Trailer's GVWR.

Then, of course, there's the Frontal Area. But that's for another day.
