My theory of Mavericks getting rear ended

…But I did look up the legality. From what I read if the dealer puts it on before you buy thr truck it's legal. But if you wanted it after you bought the vehicle it's not. I hate the damn things anyway. But found the laws not to be very clear.

This might help: I put a 3 flash LED to replace the brake light located on the cab. I know some drivers might find this annoying, but that's sort of the point . . . attention. In case you're one who may think more is better, it is against the law to do this to your main brake lights. Something about impersonating an emergency vehicle.

I don't think that a slight delay in the illumination of the brake lights is the problem. I think that distracted driving is the problem, and driving a Maverick doesn't make the people behind us any more or less safe drivers.

Agreed. Hit on freeway going 70. That's not about light delays. Happy to report that the other drivers vehicle Corolla totaled, mine with hitch, minor damage and truck handled incredibly well when hit.

Here is a suggestion I have not heard yet. My wife says the Maverick has made me a better driver. In order to get the best mileage out of my hybrid I have become one of the slowpokes that I used to aggressively try to get around. Now the aggressive drivers are not following me. When they try to push me on a two lane road I drop down to the speed limit until they back off! I used to really hate that. Of course you have to give yourself enough time to get where you are going. Most aggressive drivers are running late.

I've had my Maverick for a little over a week and the one thing I have noticed is that it feels like I have been getting tailgated WAY more than I did in my Ford Focus. I don't know if it is just perception because I now have a tailgate that sticks out behind me that it LOOKS like cars are following closer or what, but it is pretty consistent now that the vehicle behind me is close enough I can't see their headlights unless it's a bigger truck with the headlights taller than my tailgate (but that's a requirement for all truck owners it seems, the larger the compensation, the closer they drive).

I've been lighter on the gas pedal since it's new and also trying to see how efficient I can get on my mpg (68.9 on my 14 mile drive in to work yesterday, hell yeah!), but even still I am going the speed of traffic and 5+ above the speed limit where possible, yet pretty much any time I check my rear view, I see the top half of the windshield of the car behind me, even with smaller SUV's.

I can't say for the Maverick, but my wife's Mazda CX-5 has adaptive cruise control and hers seems to reduce speed fairly similar to how a driver does in that it will let off the gas to scrub some speed if the difference in speed with the vehicle in front is moderate, but if it has to slow down more rapidly, it will apply the brakes to do so and the brake lights do come on. I would hope that is industry standard, but I can't say with 100% confidence it is in the Maverick.

One small but potentially significant factor involves the Maverick hybrid's regenerative braking. Conditions such as "LOW" gear in "Eco" mode will decelerate quite rapidly without ever illuminating the brake lights. I always use care in this.

More likely, they are hypnotized by a screen they're staring at or futzing with, not your truck's ass end.

Rear-end collisions of all types of vehicles are at an all time high.

I think people look at it and are hypnotized. They say look at the beautiful little truck with the offset license plate. It is just a wonderf---- BAM...you are rear ended.

The driver of the Tacoma that ran into the back of the Cyber truck was just commenting how he was admiring the truck and didn't know what it was. $1,500 worth of damage on the Cyber truck. I have no idea about the Toyota repairs.

I've been rear ended 7 times in the last 25 years, all minor impact. Six waiting at red lights and once waiting at a cross walk.

There's really no excuse.

I think this may be a bigger factor than people realize. When your foot's off gas but not on the brake, your brake lights aren't on, but you can still be slowing very rapidly in a hybrid.

This is common among most hybrids and electric vehicles, to the extent that some have added inertial switches to put on the brake lights when you're slowing rapidly regardless of which pedals you're pushing. The Maverick doesn't have such a switch (a lot of affected vehicles don't have it). So do consider "riding" your brake a little when you're slowing in a hybrid, no matter what hybrid it is.
