Does anyone know if the electric and the engine run at the same time...on my 2023 xl I watch the horizontal blue line on the dash....when I drive 55 to 60 mph the blue dash line ( goes from 0 to60 ) sometimes stays around 55.... this is while in normal mode and I am driving on a flat surface with very little wind....

Of course, that's the definition of a hybrid. There are times when only one mode or the other is operating, however. Added: if you have got a blue bar, the ICE is on standby and not currently operating. I have been surprised at some of the speeds at which I can go with just the battery. I have had the Prius hybrid experience prior to the Maverick. The ICE kicks in at 43 MPH on our '14 Prius. I'm sure the newer versions do better also. I think our '08 kicked in the ICE at 38 MPH.

I "believe" that one of the improvements in the HF45 transmission was upgraded MG rotors that can handle higher RPMs and therefore survive electric-only speeds up to around 60 MPH. This helps my MPG quite a lot in heavy freeway traffic that lumbers along at 55 or less.

Sounds like you are using EV Coach, but it is the same on the dial power gauge, if you keep it around 0%-5% you aren't really using "electric" most of the time you are freewheeling and just not slowing by regenerating power (green zone). If you have to gain some speed and you press the pedal you'll be using a combination of electric and gas, but then back off again and freewheel. Changing driving modes will adjust where that regen "line" is but I just keep it in normal mode.

The EV coach tells you what's going on:
  • Green box(to the left of center): regenerating electricity to the HVB from coasting
  • Green box completely surrounding a white bar: regen braking
  • Green box, with the white bar extending past the box to the left: regen and mechanical braking. (Typically when this happens the power meter gauge will be all the way counterclockwise to the end of the green area).
  • Blue box (to the right of center): electric drive only
  • White bar to the right (no blue): ICE only
  • White bar, with a blue box on part of it: ICE and electric both providing drive. (This seems to be the rarest mode by a pretty big margin)

Slight correction - that is the definition of a parallel hybrid system, which the Ford is.

Honda's hybrid systems are vastly different as a series hybrid system, which only allows for power to be provided from the electric motor generator or the internal combustion engine, but never both at the same time.

I get the blue rectangle on the left end of the white bar quite often.
I was told that indicates simultaneous propulsion from both electric and ICE; and the longer the white bar is, compared to the blue, the higher percentage of ICE you're using.

Also, the blue rectangle over the white bar may be larger or smaller, depending on the amount of available battery charge at any given moment.

Pulse and glide for a three count where you can when nobody is behind you (unless you want to irritate the hell out of them). The gas engine will shut off and you'll be on electric only for several seconds and maybe more. I saw someone else post this and it works. Gets you a few extra mpg at worst.

Series hybrid just means the electric motor and gas engine are on the same driveline. Like stacked batteries in a pen light (series flashlight).

In in series hybrid, propulsion can come from electricity only, gasoline only, or both simultaneously. ALMOST the same as a parallel system.

The difference? No EV mode in a series hybrid. Since there is only one driveline, there can't be independent operation of one component. That is, if the engine spins, the electric motor must spin. If the motor spins, the engine must spin.

There can be "simulated" EV mode. The motor alone can provide all the torque and the engine can "freewheel" without burning any fuel, just like the reverse. The motor can "freewheel" without using any power and the engine can provide all the torque. These cases are rare.

USUALLY the engine and motor are providing torque at the same time. In both styles of hybrids.

What's this "three count" talk?

I usually have the gas on (pulse) for 5-10 seconds, then have the gas off (glide) for 30 seconds or more.

Does this every day of the week.

Ya, I know. Looks "crazy". And it is. Crazy good MPG.

I've exceeded 800 miles on a tank two times. Almost always go 700 miles.

You must be on flat lands with no hills to get that kind of MPG. Well done sir!

In my 22 XLT I have selected for my "Trip 2" screen = trip odometer, trip timer, distance to empty, Instantaneous fuel
The instantaneous fuel will display gas or electric on dash! If you are getting electric assist you can see 70 to 400 to 800 to 999.9 mpg and then it will display when ice starts 0.1 to 12 to 30+ mpg!!!! When parked you will see either 0.0mpg or electric in blue if ice is off.

Brother, do you YouTube? Cause you’re dead wrong. And 20 minutes of research on YT would correct you.

The definition of a series hybrid vehicle is that they do not work together to provide energy.

You are so clearly over your head on this and to speak with such authority is mind boggling.

Nope. Not wrong.

Honda Hybrids going back to year 2000 are "series hybrids".

The term used BY SOME to describe the "RamCharger" or BMW EV with "gas range extenders" aren't the same. Not really hybrids since they are NEVER hybrid powered to the wheels.

Calling those "series hybrids" is really misleading. But I see where your confusion comes from.

Because technically, an EV with a gasoline charger is not a hybrid. No more than a Tesla is with a gasoline generator on a trailer behind it.
