How would they know thats supposed to be a cat in the first place? There's still the primary cat further upstream

Just because the requirement is stupid does not mean the inspectors are stupid. They know what they are looking for and that modification is obvious. It definitely would be a "don't try this at home" modification for me.

One look at those welds tells you it was a cat delete. I've seen much worse, but it's clearly not "factory".

Welder attended the Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Ronnie Milsap school of welding. No way anyone should be able to tell that isn't a factory weld.

Who did you allow to do that? I would make them pay me, that isn't a welder, not even a grinder. What hack had the gall to charge you to make your truck look like that is beyond me.

What I did notice as soon as I drove it was a way better throttle response and less lag.

butt-dyno must be well-calibrated.

Civic guys knew that noise = HP decades ago.

From what the exhaust diagram shows, that is not a cat. It only shows it as part of the muffler pipe assembly. Also, typically cats have an 02 before and after to know when they go bad. My guess is that is a primary resonator. No aftermarket cat back systems have anything in that location. So chances of it being crucial to emissions are pretty slim.

The ceramic matrix in the second pic in OP’s first post, and the obvious heat markings on the outer shell suggest that is very much a catalytic converter.

I'm in Massachusetts it's very strick here. If it set off a check engine I wouldn't pass but this cat doesn't have sensors attacked so it's all good.....hopefully

If it is a necessary emissions device I am trying to understand why no aftermarket catback systems replace it? Even on the legal in all 50 states systems. All of the aftermarket catbacks attach to the exit if the downpipe, got to a muffler, and exit the back.

I was think that. It is not a cat. But some cars do have 2 cats.

Preface: I do not have an opinion on whether or not you should have removed it**

The 50-state legal systems are advertised 50-state legal because they do include a catalyst. This doesn’t mean that some states, or the EPA, wouldn’t frown on an owner removing a properly functioning emissions device and not replacing it. It also doesn’t negate the fact that Post-Catalysts exist, Ford has used them for decades. I can’t speak to exactly whether or not they are necessary for the vehicle to meet its as-certified emissions target (I would suspect not since they are in addition to the monitored catalysts upstream), but now I’m curious how a vehicle with removed secondary catalysts would perform in a smog test. We don’t have them here, so I’ve never considered it.

I do know of exhaust shops that won’t even replace your factory cats with high-flow aftermarket cats without a functional reason ie. your factory cats have failed or are missing. Emissions laws can be very finicky things.
