Swollen Nuts ( Lug Nuts that is )

The correct size is a 19mm with the first thread being by hand to prevent damaging the starter thread and the final 20lbs of torque being done with a torque wrench by hand

With all due respect, a 19mm socket does NOT fit the 14mm thread lugnuts that my 2023 FX4 Maverick has. Maybe you are used to a Ford vehicle with 12mm studs?

In other words, the Maverick uses a 21mm or 13/16" socket for the lug nuts.

I find that my 13/16" (.8125") socket fits better (tighter) than my 21mm (.8267").

When I first heard about two piece lug nuts I did a little research. A number of studies suggest that they are not "swollen" by rust but that the cover is damaged or twisted on the base metal by installing and removing. HTe rust appears to be secondary.

I had two piece lug nuts on my 2011 Ranger for 12 years without an issue.
That being said, I live in an area with little rain fall. I didn't rotate my tires. I ran one set of tires for 10 years. Only had two flat tires in 12 years. And I don't change to snow tires.

Even though I had no problem, I can understand the potential problem with these nuts. I assume the OEM's justify them as a cost avoidance. There are a number of threads here and on other forums with replacement nut options.

I haven't decided if I am going to replace mine yet. I still have a number of other mods to finish first. (the mud flaps just arrived.)

Ok friends some questions for the car geniuses on here.

Are all the stock Maverick lug nuts two piece and if so are they likely to cause a problem with swelling down the road, even if I live in a drier desert climate?

I am thinking of going to black since I have the BAP on a Lariat. Especially if the consensus is to replace stock.

Any recommendations from those in the know or who have already switched them out?

I switched to solid black for less than $70 installed by Discount Tire. This after my wife’s Explorer had a flat in the Northwoods and the lug wrench wouldn’t fit on 2 of the nuts.

Never had a Ford lug nut swell on me in Texas.

It is cheaper to fix a swollen nut on a FORD!

Yes. They were not in stock at my local store, but they shipped them in 2 days and installed them in 20 minutes v

Guess I'm lucky. Many years driving Fords in the rust belt and not one lug nut failure. 90% of the time used a 1/2" impact wrench on medium power on/off. Torque wrench finish.
My 95 SHO is still on orig OEM nuts, can't say for sure on the Cobra but they are Ford Nuts.

I have lived in South Carolina now many years and never had a swelling problem with any of my three Fords. One of my old Rangers did have some of the lug nut caps detach after several years. This vehicle did see several snow storms in the NE and Northern NY from many holiday trips to see family. No rusting of the lug nuts just cap separation. Replaced them with one piece as needed (maybe four). This vehicle had over 200k when I sold it. I have always rotated the tires myself, but the tire guys did get at it when mounting and balancing. I'm sure this is what deformed the caps.
