So this is something im wanting to try but have never messed with. Id like to not remove them if possible so im looking for some advice from those who know better. So the process ive seen so far.

spray down with brake cleaner and wipe off after a few minutes.

Do we need to sand them down or not? they arent rusted up yet and still fairly new.

wipe down with alcohol to remove any debris

When it comes to taping them off, is there anything specific to look for. I understand to essentially tap off anything not the caliper. I'm ok with the pads being sprayed like that one video guide.

painting wont be much of a hassle i think. im using some vht engine paint.

Is it worth doing a clear coat or the paint coat is fine?

hopefully ive not missed anything crucial.

Sanding is NFG on rough castings. A small stainless wire brush (like welders use) is much better but still has limitations. Brake cleaner evaporates really quickly, so scrub fast. A second shot with alcohol will not do any more. Brake fluid destroys paint; even special caliper paint. Calipers can get pretty hot so a clear coat might not last unless perhaps you drive your hybrid like Mr. Magoo.
Removing the calipers is easier than masking and will yield much better results, BUT but would require entering Brake Maintenance Mode to deactivate the EBB and EPB systems, so if you stick to masking I get it. There is also this caveat from Ford: "Brake pads with adhesive backing are 1-time use only. When the pads have been separated from the caliper, new pads must be installed to prevent noise and shudder." Have fun...

Do yourself a favor and spend the extra money for the G2 caliper paint. If it ever chips, send them a picture along with your receipt and they'll send you a new kit. I've used their kits for years: Lime Green on the ST's Brembos and Mustang Grabber Blue on the Escape (pretty close to RS Brembo Blue). On, and DON'T paint over the retainer spring' that's going to make changing brake pads more difficult. Pop the spring off first, paint the calipers, then snap it back on before the leftover paint in the can solidifies so you can touch-up where the fresh paint gets f'd up from reinstalling said spring.

I'll look into the G2 Paint, id love to find something close to the atlas blue metallic but I can understand if it doesnt exist.

I'm actually wanting to do wheel lights so I might be removing the caliper either way I go now. I'll do both at the same time from the looks of it. Between the youtube videos and having the service manual. it does appear to be that hard. So the spring will be out of the way.

I've used the Duplicolor system before and had great results. Like most things, prep and following instructions is key. The better your prep (including taking apart as much as you can), the better your results. This kit has plenty of paint so you will have enough for any touchups after you reassemble everything. The only thing you may need/want is more brake cleaner and maybe different tape, brush, gloves, etc. depending on your preferences.

G2 can color-match to your paint code, but it's pretty expensive

Yea I saw they had a Ford B3 version but I dont think they do metallic. to that point I dont see many metallic caliper paints to begin with so it might be a rarity.

Yeah, they'll be close, tone-wise, but no metallic.

I'm likely removing calipers because I want to put wheel lights on and I need access to the brake shroud to do so. Also after looking at youtube videos and the service manual. It doesnt appear that hard to do.

So I talked with G2, apparently they will make whatever color I request as long as I have the paint code. I'd have to think that they use some kind of chemical additive to make the paint heat resistant so a kit could come in any color.

I found high heat Ford Blue at Rural King. I bought two cans to put several coats on my new 4-piston calipers. I'm just waiting for a break in the weather. (0° tonight) My steel wheels will mostly hide the brakes, but a hint of blue poking through will be nice.
