Itās not about the braking system, itās about correct functionality of the Toad turn signals when the brake pedal is depressed in the Toad. Because the Mav lights up the brake lights when the brake pedal is depressed even if the key/ignition is off, and because its brake/turn lights are combined, you must have a relay to preserve correct lighting. The relay disables the brake lights from being driven ON when the Toad brake pedal is pressed and you are towing. What you need, is for the brake signal to come from the coach (thru the tow wiring to the tail light assembly) and not from the Toadās brake light switch. If you let the brake light switch in the toad drive the brake lights, you will have that signal overriding the turn signal that is coming from the coach. So itās not about the braking system (mine is AF1) itās about preserving the requirement that the turn signals on the back of the Toad must still flash (not be lit as brake lights) when the coach says āTurn signal Onā and then applies the brakes on the Mav. Without a relay to stop the mavās brake signal from getting to the tail bulbs, you have a malfunction in your braking and turn signal operation. Not sure if you found my file regarding the install. If you follow the referenced Ford (NHTSB) guide, you are able to pull the vanes out without damaging them at all. They just twist and slip in and out.
According to Demco, some installs have not required their removal, some have. I DID have to gently pull my 4 vanes out on my 2023. I linked the process in my guide file in another thread.
The Roadmaster install is serious destruction; quite a different thing, as the plastic frame must be cut for them.
I did add diodes to the tail lights, but there is no "relay" needed for my BrakeBuddy Classic install. Not sure what braking system you are using that would require a relay.
Some solutions drive the āonā of the relay from having the Coach tail lights on, others use the charge line from the coach to control the relay. In either situation, you then need to ensure the enabling signal from the coach is disabled (cable removed or lights off depending) before you start the Mav To stop towing or to charge the batteries.
