Sure, we remember the Ford Ranchero and the early Rangers, and we love our Mavericks, but does anyone recall the Mustero? I sure didn't until I came across these photos of a what it would look like if the Ranchero and the Mustang had a baby. Definitely a unique combination.

I would love to own one. No computer crap at all. But I would keep my Maverick as my backup ride.

I don't recall anything like that. Must be a custom job. The first photo is really nice.
There were several coach built ones in the 60s as well as at least a few 4x4 mustangs using a early version of the Jensen AWD used in AMC Eagles. Combine the 2 and sprinkle a bit of K-code or even boss magic and you would have the first Raptor.

Never thought I would learn so much, owning a Maverick, my first Ford, just from this forum and reading your replies and sharing of knowledge....really just some cool shit.

I grew up an hour or so from Detroit, and the first photo made me think prototype, but it's not futuristic looking for the time. Just really functional and funky.

I had a '94 Ford Escort wagon. Stellar mileage out of that 4-banger, 5-speed. As it got older, and my desire for a pickup continued, I seriously thought about cutting the back roof, doing some welding/bodywork/etc., and creating an Escachero. Would've been pretty cool. Alas, I sold it to a neighbor that needed some room for equipment for his job.

Side note; my Hybrid Lariat gets 40+ mileage and that Escort would get about 45. Unnatural in a car of the times.

Mike

p.s. That first Mustero is simply gorgeous!

I am reminded of Oldsmobile's venture in the late 1950's. They had the 98 and the 88, and they delved into a smaller, economic version, the Urinate, for folks who just wanted to piddle around town.

Yeah I have always been interested in coach builder cars. They literally started before cars had engines when "coaches" were built by custom order shops all over the world. It ended up making some really cool vehicles. Alot of truck/van combinations, hardtop convertibles, wild limousines, 8 door/4 row airport cars, even the Boss 429 Mustang was a coach built car. Some were one offs, some were made in thousands, and some just a half dozen or so to become legendary. The custom van era and the 80s and 90s luxury sports car eras were some of the last big ones. But van are at it again these days. I also think we may end up seeing some interesting things happen with EVs. Some are built on skateboard chassis. Which allow you to do whatever you want with a body. All it takes is the right builder to get alot of feedback at a car show and suddenly you have a wild 3 row convertible sport truck or who knows what.

The mustero was built by a Ford dealership. They were used as flower cars as many other brands did the same thing. Google flower cars and look at what some dealerships and coach builders used lol. Such a waste of a good car..lol

If you want to see "Utes Gone Wild", Australia is the motherload. They love tiny trucks down there. The USA is sadly a distant second. Though we might catch on later this decade.

The first one is nice, the second is ruined by the rear overhang.

1979-1982 Ford sold about 212 Ford Fairmont based Ford Durango 2dr Ranchero type pickup trucks. All but forgotten today. Rare but not enough demand to be very expensive. Pretty practical, though. Google them for more info and photos.

Still miss my '85 El Camino. Such a great car for me at the time, and turned a few heads too. Sadly, Michigan winters ate away at the body and when the transmission started slipping I had to let it go. The guy who bought it had plans to restore it but I never saw it again...probably scrapped.
