I recently purchased a used 2022 XLT Hybrid with 32000 miles on it. When I got the truck the key fobs would not work despite changing the batteries. Called the local dealer and they said previous owner had vehicle in earlier and they had a new PCM for it to fix the problem. Dropped it off and got a call a few hours later that it was still messed up. Took it back two days later and exchanged it for a loaner. After having it two weeks they finally called and said they found a bad ground wire and it was fixed. I've had it back for about a week now. Tonight I was laying in bed and heard a motor running in the garage. Got up to find the truck was running all by itself. After about 30 seconds it shut off. Key #1 was in the kitchen on the counter and key #2 was in the dresser drawer in our bedroom. It started completely on its own. Going to call dealer tomorrow, but I'm starting to get a really bad feeling about this truck. Has anyone heard of this happening before???

Maybe prior owner remotely started it with his phone (I'm assuming the Ford pass app uses vin number,?). Or maybe it's set to restart every so often.?

Is this your first hybrid?

You need to know:
There is a remote start feature.
Also, they can stay "on" and be completely silent for up to an hour, then restart automatically to recharge the battery.

The battery only charges about 10% in a single go, then shuts off again. That 10% charge can occur in 30 seconds to 1 minute during the right conditions.

This is great for camping an such.

It is possible there was a remote start.
It is possible it never was shut off when you parked it.
Hard to say without being there.

First, if you have a 2022 XLT like I do, then the key must be in the ignition to start or continue to run (with the exception of remote start from FordPass), so you can rule out the key fobs being the culprit. So, it's almost certainly an issue with FordPass. 1. The previous owner could have set up a schedule for it to start at a certain time of day to warm up before they left for work 2. The previous owner still "owns" it in their FordPass app and you don't. They either started the wrong vehicle or they could be messing with you and decided to start it as a joke. (hopefully that one isn't true). So I would first make sure you have the truck visible in your own FordPass app on iPhone or Android and that you go through and remove any scheduled starts. You should also take it to the dealership regardless. Hope this helped.

Damn! That would be catastrophic if that happened during an oil change..

Since the original key had issues....you might want to purchase another key (probably $30-$40) just to see if it solves the problem. You have to get the new key cut and use both keys to program the new key. Just a long shot. Also sure sounds like a for FordPass remote start issue. You might want to park it outdoors until fixed due to potential C02 concerns.

Impressive that the Ford dealer provided a loaner...I've had 2 recalls and loaners were out of the question from the dealer.

Yes it's my first Hybrid and I was aware of the remote start feature, but this was like the remote start did it all by itself. As stated both key fobs were not anywhere close to where someone could have accidently or purposely remote started it. Vehicle was also locked when I tried to get in it this morning. It was not locked when parked the night before. I did not know that it could start to charge the battery but it had been driven about 30 miles before being parked so I don't think the battery would be low. The previous problem that took the Ford dealer 2 weeks to "fix" was related to the key fobs not working due to bad communication with the vehicle not the fobs themselves. The remote start is another key fob function so I'm wondering if it's still messed up??? Thanks for your input....it's going back to the dealer on Tuesday next week.

To be clear, what you are describing does not sound "normal". Do have it looked at.

It is not supposed to start on it's own. But I'm saying it is possible if there is an ignition key problem, or if it never shut off properly.

Please tell us the diagnosis.

Have a 2022, not hybrid. My remote start from phone lets the truck run 15 minutes, then shuts off, not 30 seconds then shuts off. ASSUMING remote start feature is equal for both hybrid and non, I doubt it was a remote start. As one poster said about hybrids auto starting to charge battery and 30 seconds can do so, would look at what you need to do to make sure that does NOT happen in an enclosed area!

Good points all, but my Hybrid has NEVER started spontaneously for 30 seconds. What I think the poster was referring to is that fact that the ICE only runs on remote start if the Hybrid battery or 12V needs charged up, anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes, and then the ICE shuts off while the HVAC system heats or cools the vehicle. Then this cycle repeats over and over during the 15 minute remote start window of time until you get in and go or your 15 minutes are up. Also, to the OP, unless you have the LUX package or something I don't on my 22 XLT, there shouldn't be a remote start button on your Key Fob, so I will assume you do have that feature.

Have you set up the Fordpass app to "own" the vehicle, or does the other guy still have it set up?

The hybrid behavior is not the same as the EcoBoost.

A "start" does not require an engine start, unless it is very cold and you have the heater turned on.

For example: a remote start for summertime cooling will run the air conditioner off electricity only for as long as the battery charge is above 30%. Then, it may run for one minute to boost the battery to 40% then shut off the engine. Repeat as needed.

*Normally it will run longer than 1 minute if the engine coolant is cold but not if warm. Warm is greater than 120°F.

If you haven't done it yet.....make sure to reset the FordPass connection. That will make sure to eliminate any FordPass connection the previous owner may still have.

(Or if you phone is connected, make sure you don't have any remote starts scheduled!)

Yes, I would imagine the ability to start on its own would be a bit of a safety issue, assuming it's parked inside a garage. Although it could make for a good alibi.....
