They're slow but you can drive them hard without getting into trouble. Highly dependable, they handle like a go-kart. And in fact often you HAVE to drive them like a race car to not die in traffic.
Yep same with the rx8 in fact I think the 8 is more fun. Who wouldn’t love 10k redlines daily. And the cool factor of everyone telling you how cool it looks when it pops and shoots huge fireballs.
It not my thing with the fire but I love the sound of them. Like a two stroke snowmobile.
Only problem is everyone thinks they are fast and wanna race or they know it’s slow and want a win. I can drive one on my Mazdas without someone trying to race. Nobody even plays with the rs. Very few with the Shelby.

if you are surprised I'm surprised at your surprise. it's affordable, reliable and highly tossable.
They built a million of them (literally) They are not expensive. HUGE aftermarket.

The old adage applies. "It's more fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow."

It's true running through the gears in the Miata makes me smile and and having no room to unleash 600+HP cars makes you "edgy".

Most fun . . .
1972 2002 BMW Sedan (2002 refers to the engine size)
4 cylinder that turned out tons of torque with a 5 speed manual shifter. Handled the road like a sports car. How fast was it? Happened to be in a rare dealership and overheard a Jaguar owner being asked why he wanted a much less luxurious automobile. "I was in the fast lane doing 85 mph and there was one of these new BMW sedans right on my ass flashing his lights for me to move over".

Most fun to drive was a 2010 Mercedes Benz SLK 55 AMG on the Autobahn. Not owned admittedly though. I rented it for a weekend before a deployment and my buddy rented an Audi R8 (obviously a much cooler car).

But I did have a 98 Supra when I was over there after I came back from my first deployment. $19k which would probably now be somewhere in the $50-60k range. Insane. Cost too much for a young soldier to ship back to the US and have converted to US spec. It was not a TT and it was an automatic, but still a Supra and turned heads. It did get a little crazy at high speeds though. I had buddies with RX-7's, Skylines, and a Silvia. Some were mechanical nightmares but still cool cars. Deployment money burned holes in our pockets with those cars.

Then I got into lifting trucks and wasting money there lol. Oddly enough the one I sunk the most money into was the final one and about the time I realized that stuff is just not important to me anymore.

Now days I consider fun to drive more of a "toy" thing like quads and bikes. I wish I could afford a cool cozy 4 seater buggy style toy, but I have no real need for one. Always enjoyed the desert rods. The Mavericks is my K.I.S.S. vehicle - Keep it simple, stupid. Man I feel old...

Sold my 2005 Sporttrac when I got the Maverick. Great truck for 15 years, 168,000 miles.

Love my Maverick, but my other Ford is definitely the most fun to drive.

All my daily drivers have been manual transmission. I have owned autos, but normally the wife drives those.
81 Celica
61 Ford Falcon (may dad ruined it and put the celica motor in it for me when I crashed the celica)
88 mighty-max (I had 2 of those)
02 Ninja EX-250
98 S-10
05 Ninja ZX-6
06 vibe (330,000 miles with no problems. Only repair I had to make is the engine cover rubbed through the coolant sensor line. Odometer stopped changing at 299,999)
85 Volvo (don’t remember which one, that one came with my wife)
06 trailblazer (5.3v8 beast to drive. I wish I kept it. It was my wife’s daily driver, she wishes we kept it too)
09 cienna (sold the trailblazer for this)
11 cruse eco 1.4 l turbo with 6speed manual
09 Silverado
22 prius
24 maverick (not mine yet, on a train)

and many more family cars when I was younger.
most fun to drive (yeah, grey area) ZX-6R. I rode the hell out of that thing.
most fun to drive was the 61 falcon with the 22R Toyota motor in it. The thing was a hot mess, metal floors, couldn’t keep it from rusting. but had air shocks in the back so I could crank up the pressure and make it look bad ass. The 22R sounded great with glass pack muffler.
My dad built race cars for our local race track. He liked to tinker in the garage. He had taken a vin plate from a precessional build race car a friend of his crashed and used it to build his own from scratch car and avoid emission requirements. He called it a 1957 Merlyn. It had a highly modified Toyota Corolla 2T motor and a 5 speed manual. (one of the street series at the race track and a modified spec series used those drivetrains) it was my favorite road car to drive. The suspension was race quality and the thing had zero roll. I think the whole car weighed about 1000 lbs.
On the track, 98 Silverado Parts Pro series race truck. Girl I went to prom with wanted to come take her prom pictures in front of the truck.

Miatas may not be fast cars but they are also not slow. The way they drive makes them feel much faster than they are. Zippy is a great term for the Miata.

And you may be damned to hell if you buy one with an automatic transmission because the stick is so perfect that an auto is a crime against this little car.
I wouldn't say they're slow, around a tight complex road course, a Miata is gonna blow the doors off most of the cars there. It's all relative I suppose. I view a Miata that can carry great speed in the corners as being a better, and in many cases, a faster sports car than something like a challenger hellcat, which is going to rocket along at high speeds in a straight line, but corners like a boat with a drunk captain at the helm, not to mention you can put the miatas power down constantly, something like a hellcat, not so much.
I got beat in stop light drag races twice last week- by a 10yr old Chevy pickup and an Altima. :(

Both times were about a quarter mile away from a right-hand cloverleaf highway entrance which I could easily take 15mph faster than both cars I was stuck behind did..... :( :(

[2008-2016] 1997 Pontiac Grand Prix GT
-First car in my name
-Added aftermarket stuff to it (sound system, sway bars, strut braces, intake, downpipe, HID projectors headlights)

[2016-2017] 2005 Chevrolet Impala LS
-Replaced the GP due to oil pressure issue

[2017-2017] 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP Comp G
-Replaced the Impala due to very surprising rust coming from inside the frame rail

[2017-2017] 2004 Toyota Corolla S
-Wife and I traded daily's when I gave up trying to fit comfortably in the CompG

[2017-2018] 2014 Buick Enclave Premium
-Replaced the Corolla when it began to eat coolant and then was totaled in an accident

[2018-2020] 2008 Pontiac G6 Base V6
-Replaced the Comp G and became my daily while the wife (and now kids) got the Enclave

[2020-2023] 2009 VW Jetta SportWagen TDI
-Replaced the G6 that had overheating steering
-Got for a dollar from my father-in-law with just shy of 200k miles
-Loved the TDI, enjoyed the wagon, disliked the rest of the car

[2023-Current] 2023 Ford Maverick XLT EB
-Replaced the Jetta
-Cost per month (with payment) is cheaper than what the Jetta took to keep on the road on average

I'm fairly certain the Maverick will overtake the GP given enough time. I put nearly 100k miles on the GP.

My favorite was an '87 Trans AM GTA. Best was when I did a speed test with my brother-n-law, until we hit a pheasant doing 130 mph (us not the bird). Scared the $#!t out of us.
Second was a '77 Chevy 1/2 ton. Previous owner put on a racing cam and it could move. Once I was following a trucker up I-5 and looked down and I was doing 100 mph, didn't realize it until then.

Tie between my Honda Fits ('09 and '20) and my Maverick. They were real peppy and loved to run. Maverick suits my life now and is a nice drive.

My '91 Ranger was great and let me do all the things I enjoyed as a 25 year old.

Last on the list was a '79 Datsun 310. It was my beater car; it would do 0-60 in about 3 days (reality was about 15 seconds). Fly wheel was wearing out, had to rock the car to pop the clutch and start the car 90% of the time. Got rid of it soon after the carburetor got stuck wide open and I had to force it to flood and stall the motor.
