Tire Rotation: Pinch Weld Protectors, Jack Point Musings

That design does not distribute the weight along the entire surface of the pinch weld, just where the pads are. Probably ok, but I prefer my free piece of wood.

add my two magnetic pads and we have a winner. I had never thought to lift the whole side before but I will now. saves time when swapping snows for summers

I would not recommend getting under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Since these need to go where the jack stand should go, I guess I don't see the point of them. Maybe if you're just changing a tire or something, but you could just jack directly on the pinch weld without these.

I never said I would crawl under them, they are great to lift from a point where the mfg. co suggests and not damage the pinch weld. But if I wanted to lift the entire side or am taking things apart, I use jack stands. Look into JackPoint jack stands... the owner is a buddy and they are awesome but were designed for Porsches and quick/safe lifts while at the track.

I keep it simple and use my floor jack and two stands to rotate tires. Ground to jack point is 10.5 inches on my hybrid.

Unibodies definitely made me reconsider things and complicated the process lol. I still just jack next to the jack stand though. There is plenty of space there for me to squeeze in a jack and the stands.

But you torqued your lug nuts wrong, steve. I'd expect you to know better. Full send on the impact. Anything less is just asking for a wheel to fall off... If your impact isn't smoking you are not giving it enough juice.

The ol "goodn'tight" torque method

That's how we did it in the military when hasty repairs were needed. When you need the biggest guy to jump up and down on the breaker bar to get a nut off (giggity), it's too damn tight lol. I don't think I ever once saw any mechanics bring a torque wrench with them and the only place I ever actually saw them was garrison in the motorpool for extensive rebuilds - most of which was handled by civilians anyways lol.

That is awesome. So the wedges are used to push up on the pinch welds? The only thing that worries me is bending those. That and "Powerbuilt" doesn't exactly have the greatest reputation. But I love the idea, so I'd be willing to overlook that and give it a shot. Are you able to turn the handle to drop it down?

I'd also have to measure my jack stands to see if they would fit. Probably not. Does it only work with the 2 ton stands?

I tried ordering 4 of their jackstand all in one designs and sent them back immediately though. One, because they were too tall to fit under the Maverick and would require me using a floor jack anyways, and two because there was quite a bit of wobble and the construction was sketchy as hell.

Anyways, I had to go through HF for their jack stand recalls once before too. Project Farm just did a cool video on jack stands as well. Kinda surprising to see some of those brands not hold up so well.

Is it the best jack- no, but it works great. I've had mine over a year.

Obviously, you need to jack in the appropriate spot. The entire pinch weld isn't reenforced like it is at the jack points.

I seem to remember an old WWII movie where a soldier always carried around a big wrench in the motor pool so that everybody would think he was busy and would not ask him to do anything.

I bought two of these at the recommendation of a forum member and be damned if you don't need all 11" of clearance for them - so these won't work on the Maverick.

I had a 2x10 laying around so I cut two pieces and drive up on them which allows just enough clearance to slide them under the truck with the pinch weld rubber adapter on the bottle-jack-stand.

EDIT: I did buy the 3 Ton jack - the 2 Ton version should work.

I just ordered a jack rod. Proeagle and AGM sell them (same product - per the patent number). A little cheaper from AGM. I think it will work well for some minor work on the truck. If I was doing anything more complex...I will use traditional jack stands.

I don't think I would get under the vehicle when it is on that. The jack is on wheels and could roll out from under the vehicle.

I would not get under the vehicle either with 'just' this. I use ramps for oil changes. I will use this for tire rotations and brake jobs.

That's why I got the U-Jack. Works on all our vehicles and uses normal stands. It's the simplest fix to the pinchwell issue.

Can get a vehicle up at all four corners in no time and do a 4 wheel cross rotation.
