It's an $11,040 difference. That XL is FWD... That Lariat is AWD w/ Lux, 360, 360Assist, Spray-In, 18 Alloys included, so quite a loaded vehicle...

With the Maverick is into it's third model year and production is just finally, slowly catching up with demand, criticizing Ford about design/pricing decisions seems counterintuitive.

I think OP is looking at the total model gap....in other words, from no option base, to full option top trim. That is a ~$20k spread. But this is common with most multi-trim models from any OEM, and is usually much greater.

His point however, still remains a mystery....

Sorry for not being clearer but my point is that Ford has gone to "a la cart" pricing which is exactly what allowed the imports of the 80's to break into the market. This killed the big 3 and not until 90's did they catch on and started adding a lot of features into the list price. I guess I'd be real curious how many XL's with no options are on the road...obviously take out those purchased for commercial purposes. I believe the old term for it was "bait and switch!" Low price gets you in the door...then the up-sell.

Bait and switch is not at all appropriate here because you CAN STILL BUY THE base XL.

It sounds like you wanted a 1 priced, fully loaded but inexpensive XL model?

Still don’t know why we can’t get a base truck , no stereo, no rear bumper , one side mirror and roll up windows with a five speed?add options from there!
i.e. Bumper/spare/stereo / other side mirror , off road package/awd/skid plates/locker ,power windows / locks/ carpet / cloth seats ,and then foo foo option package( heated things)/ wireless whatever/apple-google play.
too much convenience as standard has made an entry level mini truck 40k!
4 option packages or 5 with drivetrain choice. Pay as you want ,done.
if you wanted any other features do it aftermarket!
but noooooo everyone wants to finance the fluff and stuff , instead of doing it themselves!
and Corporations thrive off of it!

I don't think anyone disagree the market is bad right now, but that's not even what this is about. It's not about getting cloth seats on a 50k vehicle, or 20 different packages existing, or who can sell a vehicle with the most features as a baseline... it's about you not paying attention to what was ordered and expecting the works.

You are just venting about random shit at this point. It's nothing new, there is no automaker that offers all options on base models across their spread. You want something? It's a package or another model. Are prices insane right now? Yes. Will it change anytime soon? No. So why'd you buy a new vehicle in this market if you already know that? Good luck getting any truck for less than $40k with this many options that isn't used, especially in this size and this efficient.

Just quit whining. You didn't have to accept the order. You could have declined and ordered what you actually wanted, learning from your mistakes. Venting about the market - where it was, is or will be - changes nothing. There is nothing new here and your comparison to the 80s is clouded. By your logic, every vehicle came with power windows, a cell phone, a CD player, leather... Etc etc. Did they? No.

As mentioned above, fuel costs were the primary advantage that helped imports break into the market along with better reliability, better fit and finish, and more value for the money. Take a look at what Honda and Toyota were offering in the mid-1980's model years and compare to what the Big 3 were offering.

The difference is why we purchased a new Isuzu I-Mark for my wife in 1981 and replaced it with a Honda Accord in 1985.

As for value, it wasn't because the imports included options in the base price and the Big 3 didn't. It was because the imports got you a lot more for a lot less money. The price of a 1986 Accord EX (top of the line) max'd out at $4,400.00. The base price of an entry level Ford Taurus L was $9,645. Adding options just made the problem worse by another $4,132.00.

I say make the best out of it. You have a nice truck, if you'll just let yourself enjoy it. Get some lights and a power outlet for the bed and a heated seat cover to keep your tushy warm. Problem solved.

This is not a complement. The Japanese grew in the US market in the 80's because they made most options on US cars as standard on theirs. If you got a 1980 AMC Spirit it came with a motor, 4 tires and a steering wheel. You wanted an AM radio...extra, you wanted A/C...extra, you wanted wheel covers and not hubcaps...extra. Well Ford is back to this idiotic logic with the Maverick. I bought a new 2023 Maverick XLT hybrid from a dealer off of the lot. I got it for $31k. Had heated steering wheel and seats, bed light with 12v plug and AC converter, had back up sensors with display. Probably some other stuff I can't remember. Thought I would have it till July 2024 when my 2024 XLT FX4 was allegedly being delivered. However, Ford screwed that up and I got my car in Dec 2023! That being said, I guess I should have really looked at the order form a little better. Found out XLT really doesn't mean a whole lot other than it a step up from the XL. I ordered a sunroof, spray liner, bed cover, mud flaps, tow package yet I didn't realize until I got it there was no heated seats, no bed lights or adapters, a backup sensor that just warns you with no display to show how close. Shame on me I guess for assuming a lot of those came with the XLT model. I really like my truck but I would have paid for those options had I known I needed to. Shame on salesman for not pointing any of that out as well.
