Truck was parked in the garage last night - not heated but certainly not as cold as outside, let's say it was probably just above zero in the garage this morning. '23 XLT Hybrid (no Co Pilot) started fine and I drove up town, about a 10 minute drive. Thermometer on the dash said -14F. Parked the truck for about 45 minutes.

Got back in the truck, turned on the key to start/run. I got some red alert I'd never seen about pedestrian warning. In hindsight I should have taken a picture of the dash. It appeared the truck was on - said it was in electric driving mode. However.......truck would not shift out of Park. Foot on the brake and nothing.

I tried off and on several times, opening the door, lock/unlock and the result was the same.

After about 10 minutes I repeated the process, something clicked, the gas engine came on, and I could shift out of park and drive. A "check engine" light came on and I got a Service Engine Soon warning on my FordPass that says "the engine system has detected a fault".

I tried toggling through the dash settings to see if it would tell me anything but did not find a menu or area than told me any information.

I tried searching the forum when I got home but didn't find anyone who reported a situation like this. I'm guessing is has something to do with the brutal cold but who knows.

Has anyone else had a similar situation?
yes I had the same problem it the battery make sure you have it start each day in the winter that will help a lot.

Per manual. Do not hook anything to negative battery terminal post as it may cause problems connect to body ground. Where the negative post is grounded or elsewhere. Best to just connect to jump posts under hood.
Where in the manual does it say not to hook anything to the battery's negative post. I keep a trickle charger hooked to my 1st Edition all the time now!

When I lived in upstate NY I used to put a light bulb under the hood to keep things warmer in cold weather

The HVB starts the ICE. Below -5F Li-ion batteries may not be able to discharge. My guess is the 12v battery can heat and circulate the antifreeze enough to heat the HVB above -5F. At that point the ICE will start.

Temps here in TN went below negative last night, mine was parked outside all night. Used the app to auto start and let it run for 10 minutes and I didn't have an issue. I have a 23 Hybrid XL with CO pilot 360. So far no problems.

I've heard something about this. From my ford country Las Vegas sales man while ordering my 2024 2.0 eco boost. They may have an answer aswell.

2022 manual page 312 Maintenance Section paragraph Battery Management system and Electrical Accessory Installation.
Also mentioned in threads. Attaching things to the negative post can result in the BMS which is located on the neg post in mis reading the SOC.

JUST GET GROUND ON BODY MAYBE WHERE NEG CABLE IS BOLTED TO BODY. I just use the jump posts under the hood.

The 12v closes the relays to hvb in hybrid and the dcdc converter powers things including recharging the 12v. The ice will be started when needed.

Who knows, probably could be related to numerous things. My 2 guesses are heat exchanger, battery. Get your dealer to check it out and keep us updated on the resolution. Good Luck
Losing confidence in the Maverick...May flip it now while it is worth money....Go back to Honda...My 3 year old CRV hybrid ...Zero issues....And insurance on Maverick 1000 k a year for a XL hybrid....A joke////

When in neutral it is the HVB that provides the power to spin MG1 which in turn spins the ICE to start it. At cold temperatures although charge the HVB may not have any output.

How does your CRV keep the HVB warm when the temperature is -5F and has been turned off for over an hour?

I just got done posting my "frigid dash screen lock up" screed. I have a heated garage, never get below 45 degrees. My only fail here was the dash screen "froze" up on the number "7" as i turned up the fan to defrost my windows. I had only driven two miles, in town, and was only parked 40 minutes. Truck ran fine but the screen stayed frozen until I got home and shut it all down, waited two minutes and tried again. Its been fine since\. It was 25-30 below yesterday and balmy -1 today.

I live in the Sierras. On those super cold mornings, even with a new battery and gas car, there can be a noticeable slow grind to start. That battery just saying it's too freaking cold. But, I would check the 12 volt battery just to make sure. Although on a basically new car, I wouldn't think the battery would be bad.

Be careful with this, L mode does NOT light up the brake lights when decelerating!!!
Yes, I am well aware. My 2015 Chevy Volt did the same thing. This becomes a concern mostly when someone is tailgating, and they should be mindful of the distance. Personally, I haven't encountered any issues with it. I use it regularly in stop-and-go traffic and, more recently, in snowy conditions.
