Stopped by a Loves truck stop in Quartzite AZ last night on the way back to PHX from CA. Saw this line of cars leading to the EV charging station (where all stalls were full), with a Ford Lightning in the back. An older guy walked by me, looked at the line, laughed, shook his head and said “Go back to California!”.

by the way did you happen to notice how much the charged for a re-charge? i have no idea what the pricing model looks like for this service.

It is almost always cheaper than gas
Except at tourist spots and other "gotcha" locations. Just like a hot dog is $10 at a stadium and a beer is $15.

Usually power for EV's is 3 cents to 6 cents per mile. 3 cents at home; 6 cents at a public charger.

Really you would think for the first decade of this push all EVs would come standard with a "safety" generator that has the appropriate charging rate to power it up off of a 3 gallon gas tank. Focusing on efficiency, even if you had to stop for 30 minutes get a bite to eat and let it charge to give you 15 percent or something thats pretty fair for getting to a reasonable destination. Build cars like that until gas stations start getting sparse instead of the other way around.
Because you can buy that now. Today. They came out about 10 years ago. There's literally dozens of models to choose from.

No I didn’t walk over that way, wish I had. My son and I were beat from a few days of motorcycle road racing at Chuckwalla raceway near Desert Center and had 3 more hours to drive back home. Next round in a few weeks I’ll check it out on the way back over.

I occasionally drive by a big bank of superchargers in NH. This morning there was one in use. There are at least ten there.
to balance out the ridiculous anti-EV anecdotes I drove by this same bank of chargers again during commuting time and it was 100% empty. this is at a major highway rest stop on 93 in NH. there is a high volume of traffic going up and down 93 every day. I was driving by the northbound bank of chargers both times. there is a similar set of chargers on the southbound side of the highway (there is a rest stop on both sides).

the biggest problem in NH seems to be a lack of chargers when you get up north but there is in general a lack of a lot of things up there because it's a lot of national and state forest.

pointing out instances of lines at charging stations just proves that people are bad at planning. if you want to buy an EV:
  1. you need a reliable and cheap place to do the bulk of your charging (probably home or work)
  2. if you know you'll regularly need to charge away from home you should be aware of how available the charging infrastructure is in terms of location and wait times.
  3. if you need to regularly take long trips (beyond the range of the EV) you should again know what you'll be dealing with or you should maybe have a second, non-EV vehicle for these situations.
  4. similar to 3, if you regularly lose power for extended periods of times having an ICE backup is a good idea. similarly, you should have some gas tanks ready to fill up so when the power goes out and the pumps aren't working so you can gas up your ICE.

It's when a person fails to plan that there is an issue. ICE vehicles are great for most people though because most people are dumb as rocks.

personally, I could do just fine with one of our vehicles being an EV. for now I'd still want an ICE option just because of where I live but that EV would get heavy use for 99% of my driving.

Lol!

Yeah, the empty banks of chargers I just mentioned are next to a diner, a liquor store, a convenience store, restrooms, a gift shop, etc.

I mean, you have to walk maybe 40 yards to get to those things. I'm sure some here would demand diesel powered wheelchairs that roll coal to get across the parking lot because sometimes it's cold outside and walking is hard for some people.

I see a bunch of golf carts. No plug in toasters for me.

Once upon a time lines for gas were like that of course it had to do with an oil embargo.
I suppose if one never drives much more than 30-40 miles from home it's ok.

My biggest chuckle are the charging stations powered by huge diesel generators.

The biggest problem I have with EVs is I am not looking to get one but I (and every tax payer) is helping to pay for them. If you want one fine, but don't ask me to help pay for your vehicle or the system you need to make it work. I don't ask you to help pay for my vehicle or gas.

Your wife sounds like a smart woman I'm glad you listened to her about the MME.

Of course I might have some bias involved with that statement.:D

Just wish they looked like a mustang.
But, seriously, the main host of a radio talk show I listen to here in the Indianapolis area was given one of these to drive for a bit by a Ford dealer that advertises. His comment: the unending continuous torque was awesome!

It would work if it payed someone work it like a service station. Either through moving the cars or moving the chargers on a track system or something. Or just put a parking fee that runs on the quarter of the hour on the cost. For one its enough to eek out millions in profits on people that wait the extra 9 minutes people leave it. Or you have fancy places that you pay a higher "concierge" rate to move your car off the charger and to the premium parking. But if gassers cant park in those spots up front that are basically as sweet and handicap spots, then anyone parking there not charging should be paying standard city curb parking rates.
I'd buy an EV if it's limitations fit my needs - when means I'd have to put in a charging station in my garage, plus I would always have to have that part of the garage open for it to park. (Try that during the summer months when you are doing yard projects, or your kids have bikes, etc. parked there) Just kind of another hassle, let alone those that do not have garages.

I decided to buy my first hybrid ever with this Maverick, and I have a used 2009 Prius entering my fleet for my teenage son come this December.

The cords are pretty long. My neighbor can rarely park in his garage but he just parks near the door and the cord reaches fine.

Not to say this situation doesn’t suck, but this post is just an example of finding a worst-case incident to fit a narrative and then suggest it’s a normal occurrence. It’s how so many people try to frame every argument these days.

The incentive is there for a reason. I could argue that every ICE engine is contributing to climate change, pollution and the health and economic issues that come with those things.
