Sure, but right now there is barely enough grid capacity in some areas, California being one of them. Add millions of EV cars while reducing the number of coal and nuclear generating plants and try to depend on ‘renewable’ energy sources that require sun or wind and no snow or super cold temps and missing massive battery capacity that requires mining lithium and cobalt etc, some from African countries that use child labor, and you have a disaster waiting to happen. Meanwhile corrupt govt mandates get adopted and taxpayers subsidize an EV industry that most folks aren’t interested in right now. All while China, the greatest threat to the US, builds more coal plants this year than the rest of the world COMBINED and rakes in billions from their nearly cornered solar panel production, laughing all the way to the bank of world economic domination.

Seen a video in CA at Tesla charge station before. Big lines. EV's are if your a two car family and have gas car for travel. In the end EV's don't do much lowering of co2 at all now even if you charge off your own solar.

I had a Mach E for about 5 months last yr. I do a lot of weekend trips and cross country trips. Weekend trip to Houston was mostly easy cause there was enough charging structure to get by but when I went to Corpus on the gulf coast that was definitely a pain and hasn’t improved at all since then. It was an interesting experiment driving an EV but ultimately decided I was correct that it’s at least 10 yrs away from reaching its potential for my life style.

This is for EV owners that drive further than their range and HAVE to use public charging. Not the case for those who don't surpass their range on a regular basis and can charge at home.

But, THIS is a large reason why I am more a proponent of PHEV over BEV. The public infrastructure in it's current state sucks ass, and a large amount of people cannot charge at home. All of these bullshit mandates WILL get reversed or at least pushed out further and further imo.

Really you would think for the first decade of this push all EVs would come standard with a "safety" generator that has the appropriate charging rate to power it up off of a 3 gallon gas tank. Focusing on efficiency, even if you had to stop for 30 minutes get a bite to eat and let it charge to give you 15 percent or something thats pretty fair for getting to a reasonable destination. Build cars like that until gas stations start getting sparse instead of the other way around.

All the charging stations I see in a suburb of Columbus Ohio are always empty. The local utilities and governments have spent who knows how much to build them, and I never see anyone using them.

I do remember in the parking garage I used in downtown Columbus they had a charging station. Often times in the morning I saw A Tesla parked there with an estimate 1-2 hours until fully charged. I'd come back 9 hours later at the end of the day, and the Tesla would still be sitting there, fully charged for hours.

Public charging depends on the thoughtfulness of it's users, which is why it will never work for the masses.

It would work if it payed someone work it like a service station. Either through moving the cars or moving the chargers on a track system or something. Or just put a parking fee that runs on the quarter of the hour on the cost. For one its enough to eek out millions in profits on people that wait the extra 9 minutes people leave it. Or you have fancy places that you pay a higher "concierge" rate to move your car off the charger and to the premium parking. But if gassers cant park in those spots up front that are basically as sweet and handicap spots, then anyone parking there not charging should be paying standard city curb parking rates.

I would not wait 7 minutes at a gas station for a pump.
There are 4 on every corner.
Even knowing it will only take 2 minutes to fill up after that.
And then how long does it take to charge your car to full?
What do you do in that time?

I regularly drive by 2 Tesla charging stations and both have a line all the time. They are never empty. It looks like a used Tesla lot. Around me, all of the free charging stations are used and the only ones available are the ones that charge $0.50 to $1 per kWh.
it is the same with gasoline though, the stations like Costco that are $0.20 cheaper per gallon have a long line. But even when I have waited in that line before, it took me less time to get a full tank of gas than it would to charge at a fast charger.
Not counting Tesla, how long has fast charging been around? Last couple years? Please correct me if I am wrong because I am going on observation from tv ads. So unless you have a newer electric vehicle, then it takes longer to charge.
I asked a friend who has a PHEV about it, he was arguing the same thing that a lot of people here are, there are charging stations, if you can find them, and if you want to drive a long distance, drive a different car (his PHEV takes 5.5 hours to charge for 60 miles, if you were curious, bet it would be fun to wait for him to get off the charger).
Many of you have said, get the electric vehicle for commuting and a ICE for trips, that is great for those of you that have the means to have 2 vehicles. When Pamela Anderson bought one of the first Saturn EV1s back in the 90s, she said the same thing (I did a report about EVs in high school) she had a Toyota for driving anywhere far (so she claimed) . But not all of us are movie stars.
For those of you that argue that we don’t have to buy one, wait until California doesn’t allow sale of new ICE engines in 2035. Everyone says, “oh, they will change the law before that happens.” Nope. Give it a few years, when California adopts something, a lot of states follow suite.
And finally, those of you that say that the infrastructure is not there? I believe that is true, for now. Central California can’t power everything it needs to power right now, let’s add a few more hundred thousand electric vehicles to that mix. There is time for that to change, but California has not done much in the last 25+ years I have been paying attention, how do we expect it to be any better in the next 12? Either way, unless all states decide to adopt the plan for charging stations, then cross country trips will not be easy.
Ever run out of “gas” in an EV? You have to be towed or the tow truck has to have a fancy generator on board to charge your batteries. Both aren’t cheap. Having a buddy bring you a gallon of gas or walking to the gas station will be a thing of the past.
So, as for now, I am going to keep my hybrid that gets 61 mpg, and I am going to buy something with an ICE engine until I feel that my situation, the infrastructure, or the technology gets to a point that I feel that EVs are worth it to me.

Stopped by a Loves truck stop in Quartzite AZ last night on the way back to PHX from CA. Saw this line of cars leading to the EV charging station (where all stalls were full), with a Ford Lightning in the back. An older guy walked by me, looked at the line, laughed, shook his head and said “Go back to California!”.

love this anecdote this is why America should favor Hybrids over full EV's in the near term. not to mention all the folks who have no at home charging options. full EV's are just not ready for prime time....yet.
