As we prepare to take delivery of our 24 Mav next week I was just comparing trade in vs a cash sale with some of the more popular car buying companies. We will be selling or trading our pristine low mileage 2015 Honda Accord Hybrid. 45K on the clock with no accidents and stored in a garage in Texas. What stood out to me was how much lower KBB is compared to everyone else. But then when I looked at their ownership I can see why. Cox Automotive is a multi-brand car selling conglomerate. It's in their best interest to low bar the values. KBB's trade in was 6K below Carmax and Carvana. Vroom matched KBB. Even figuring in the sales tax savings on the trade the retailers walk away with the deal. Thoughts?

The dealers version of KBB is not the same as private party. A dealership may use the KBB as a leverage tool, but they also use local dealer auction results as a more accurate guideline for their area.

KBB (cash offer) has always low balled offers on my 2022 Ford Maverick Hybrid.

From my Sep 18, 2023 post:

This is the results of trading in my MY22 and selling outright to one of the online companies:

I had Carvana, Vroom, CarMax, KBB and the AutoNation Dealership where my MY23 Maverick is being delivered later this month make offers on buying/trading-in my MY22 Maverick XLT Hybrid.

These were the offers I received from worst to best:

The absolute worst: KBB offer of $27,420
2nd worst: CarMax: $28,500
Middle: AutoNation: $27,250 + $1,646.88 tax savings = $28,896.88
2nd Best: Vroom: $29,896
Best: Carvana: $31,404

Carvana was $1,508 higher than the next best offer (Vroom) and $3,984 higher than the worst (KBB)

The AutoNation Dealership offer of "$27,250 + $1,646.88 sales tax savings = $28,896.88" was overall $2,507.12 worst than the Carvana offer even considering the sales tax savings.

Also, for a reference, enter the vehicle at JDPower.com
which also redirects from nadaguides.com NADA is where my insurance company used to determine replacement value for a vehicle that may be potentially totaled in a wreck.

I recently had a family member sell a 5 year old chevy to Carvana, couldn't believe they paid close to 2K more for it than all the other online options and local car lots.

I've always found Carvana to offer the best price, I've sold 5 cars to them and they always beat Carmax and Vroom. They also do direct deposit which makes selling to them easy and fast.

Thank you for that suggestion. Per JDpower , In clean condition that is about 2K more than the carvana offer.

Maybe print out your highest 2 or 3 quotes, including NADAguides/JDPower, for bargaining help on delivery day.

I'm waiting for my '24 to come in. As a stopgap I bought the only Maverick I could find on the lot anywhere at the time, a loaded Lariet for $42k (otd). KBB just rated it at $42k which I would be ecstatic to get. Dealer offered me MSRP which I'm considering. My new '24 Maverick is supposed to come in in a couple of months. Waiting impatiently.

I've taken photos of each of the quotes. So hopefully that will help.

We recently sold a car to Cargurus. They had the best offer over Carvana, Vroom, Driveway and KBB. That was the down payment for my Mav.

Just traded in my 2022 Honda.

Carmax offered $32,600.
KBBm $30,100.
A month ago, Carvana offered $33,000. Yesterday, I got an e-mail saying the car was now worth $25.000. lol

Ultimately showed the dealer the Carmax offer on trade, which they matched, saving me about $900 in sales tax if I'd have sold it and bought a new car separately.
