I went to a sound shop after I installed after market speakers and they were saying it will fry the system. Is this true?

Absolute BS. I am not an expert. There is no way a speaker can blow a system. It either works or it does not.

I'd love to have heard the full, original conversation because this sounds pretty strange.

they could be fearmongering which is a terrible way to sell anything, or you could have missed some context about something. for example if you asked if an amp has to be wired directly to the battery, they would tell you YES or it could fry existing wiring if you try it any other way.

I was telling him how I replaced the door speakers and how I will soon replace the tweeters on the dash. The then asks if I put in a coaxial or component speaker and then starts talking about how the coaxial speaker could fry the system. I was confused when he brought this up.

He probably wanted to upsell you to component speakers.

yep. fearmongering douche.

a better thing to observe would be that the tweeter in a door-mounted coaxial fires into the legs of front seat passengers and can be significantly off-axis if the tweeter is aimed straight out from the center pole (and most of them are).

another reason not to do it would be that if you have coaxial tweeters and dash tweeters both amplified, it's going to be very bright. you can attenuate this with a dsp, but using the factory radio's 'treble' level adjust is not going to be nearly enough.

Could it be the guy was concerned about the amp vs speaker impedance?

It would if the ohm rating of the speakers you installed is lower than what the system can handle.

Never take advice from someone who starts by saying "I am not an expert".
Yes, using the incorrect impedance speakers can fry the amps output. No, you can not just measure the "ohms" with a ohm meter but the speaker's specs should tell you it's impedance (in ohms). You can generally go higher in impedance but you shouldn't go lower. So if your amp's output is rated for 8 ohm speakers, hooking up 4 ohm speakers can cause the amp to blow.

Just wondering what car audio amp is putting out 8 ohms though?

My bad 😕, Sorry for the "Crappy" advise op.
No mention of an amp....just speaker replacement.

Any amp can do 8ohms if wired that way, the power output is going to be significantly lower in this case though. Just a higher resistance, though hard to say if the impedance is too high that the amp would get choked out and cause damage. I'm not sure if this has ever really been covered though.
