Just went to get the winters put on and my mechanic noted that my rear rotors are quite rusty for 8000 miles. Most of my driving is rural, with a few city trips...so not much hard braking going on. And I'm not out everyday, so low-mileage situation.

Any tips? I heard braking in N once in a while might help?

Rotors get rusty here after a weekend of no driving. I wouldn't worry about it... But you could also just brake hard every now and again (in N or keep in gear).

I really don’t drive my XLT much, it sits outside all times. Has just over 300 miles. I do walk about it daily seeing the brake discs. So far not seeing any surface rust. If I do, I would drive it a bit to clear any surface rust. Today it’s pretty wet, raining, humid day. So keeping keen eye on the discs.

What locale weather conditions are you driving in? Your location says "maverick", which is somewhat nebulous.

I drove mine yesterday and parked it about 3pm it's noon today and it rained last night so wind blown rain drops. Might be time for titanium rotors or Lazer printed titanium wear surface???

My sister-in-law stayed with us for a few days and I noticed her discs were all rusty. Her car had spent about 1.5 days out in the rainy weather at our place. I took it to fill it with gas and by the time I got back all the discs were shiny again.
Perhaps putting the your truck in reverse and braking hard to a nice quick stop a few times, might help get the rear brakes to work a bit harder and clean off the rust.

Good luck.

I will vote for at every drive cycle for the first three stops from over 40mph Regen should not exceed 50%>. 100% Regen brake = 0% hydraulic brake pad contact of course ice brake computer routine will be jealous and feel neglected. Of course the rust can be blamed on young whippersnapper two thumbs up (gamer) programmer that should have a minimum frequency and pressure of brake pads programmed into program. Sort of like having to pick up more ammo to keep from being wiped out!

Get a can of Wurth sbs brake treatment and spray your rotors. Google it. It is made to stop squeals but it has rust properties as well. I would suggest all rotors. Recommended by bmw factory for every brake job.
