Shutter in front of radiator

This is what comes to mind, that’s it’s like a shutter or vent closing mechanism, but am unsure if that’s the correct term. I have been driving my XLT for 7 months but just noticed this haha.

What is this and does it open or close automatically? Never seen this before but is my first new vehicle since 2007.

It's an active grill shutter. They open and close based on temperature of engine coolants and AC. Them being closed helps areodynamics.

I haven't looked on the Maverick, but on my Bronco if you remote start they all open and close i'm assuming as a functionality check.

I would think it would be the same way on the Maverick if you wanted to see them in action.

Yeah mine is on both upper and lower… I’m impressed on our cheaply trucks they thought to do this haha.

This system reminds of the big-rig trucks drivers fifty years ago putting a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator during winter months. I believe they did it to get heat for the cab quicker and more efficiently. Doubt they realized they may be making their rig more aerodynamic. Some car drivers also used this trick.

Newbie here...I just got my xlt this week ,ordered 13 months ago,built 3 weeks ago . Do 2023 hybirds have active shutters ? It's been cool here in the mornings and they're open .never seen them closed . Are they a there just stay open ?

In the hybrid the upper 2/3-3/4 of radiator is for the engine coolant and the bottom separate portion of radiator is for the HVB coolant! Their shutters should act separately depending on need to or not.

I know they work on a 2022, but do they still work on the late 2023's because of the fire issues ? When are yours closed ?

At what temp do the shutters close ,mine is a 2023 hybird ,gettin cold here and never once saw them close.....
