NOOOOOOOO, why can't Ford figure out how to paint vehicles? I'd really suggest folks keep an eye on this as these kind of issues should be covered under the 3/36 base warranty but will absolutely not be covered by anything else, including the premium Ford ESP. They will tell you to go pound sand otherwise, well known issue with Ford vehicles in the past.

Had the exact same thing happen to our 2017 Escape. Fortunately it showed up just before end of our 3 years and we got it fixed under warranty.

Yikes. Exactly what I was afraid of...a repeat of the Bronco Sport fiasco.

Built Ford Tough, eh?

Just consider it a patina adding character to your aging truck. 😄🛻

Porsche and Audi both, from the factory, suggest 90 days minimum for paint to cure. They both highly recommend not to “clay bar” , 3-M wrap, or “ceramic coat” their paint until 4 or 5 months after purchase. Especially since almost all cars are now clear-coated.

Higher end vehicles get a primer via a dip, let primer coat dry, then painted with premium paint (multiple coats), then baked for several hours under heat lamps, in volume Ford plants they’re not looking for the premium paint that can take a lick with a piece of gravel…otherwise it would cost more than $19,995.99
Good info. So are you saying not to wrap ppf on the Maverick as soon as possible because the paint might still be curing or did the above recommendation only apply to Porsches and Audis?

Is this a curing issue or a paint adherence issue?
I’m no expert, but it looks like an adhesion issue caused by an inclusion (maybe air bubble).

Ive been putting film on brand new Porsches at the dealership for over fifteen years. Never had an issue. I routinely do brand new cars on a daily basis.

How much of the Maverick do you and others intend to wrap?

The reason modern day paint is a shit is because of EPA/environmentally conscious actions taken by manufacturers. Toyota ran into a rift of shit over their white paint - which from my fren who works at Toyota in their body shop, they are covering under warranty - but was caused by eco friendly crap.

I had a similar problem on my Model 3. The first few weeks it was getting paint chips on every other drive, but after that, nothing seemed to bother it. The only explanation I have is that the paint got more durable over time. Those initial paint chips, as well as dent from a larger rock, were repaired by Tesla for free, while doing warranty work on a small patch of discolored paint (in a different part of the vehicle). Very nice of them.

A small fleck of oil or grease on the base metal can create this kind of hole. The paint just flows around the spot and doesn't stick. Look under magnification at the hole. If the outer rim of the hole has a rounded over shape this is likely what happened.

Guessing it is something else because paint generally cures in 24 hours. I would bet it has something to do with the surface prep.

I plan to avoid car washes and planning a simple soap/water bucket wash for 1-2 months, and then a wax job to protect the paint.
James, you are a smart guy. I have always heard, even as a child, that a new car should avoid car washes in drive through methods for at least three months. In common times, when cars were built and then shopped and commonly sat on dealer lots for a couple months without travel it seems the paint had time to truly cure; but with Maverick, the buyers are waiting for their new truck and Ford will ship them out as quickly as possible, with the vehicle going right to work on the road. Anyone that can, please value your paitn job by being thoughtful of where you drive and care for the exterior for a couple months. Even with care however, dings will happen. I remember my brother's 1984 Camaro being rear ended on the way home from dealership. The model wass new and parts were scarce. He had to wait for repairs and ended upp driving a rent a car for three months while his new sports car sat awaiting body work. It still brings me sadness to think these things happen.

Are there any colors which are less sensitive?

This news is also all over Bronco Sport forums for this color though, it’s been buyer beware for Cactus and A51 lovers.
Is it possible that there are just more owners with those 2 colors? In our own order tracker those colors account for 36% of orders - could just be the colors are more common?

I'll probably cover the whole vehicle since thats what I do for a living. Sunkek (owned by Eastman Kodak and made in America ) has new film with a ceramic coating called Reaction that Ill be using on it.

https://suntekfilms.com/paintprotection/ppf-reaction

Usually for trucks and SUVs, I'll recommend a partial coverage like those old black vinyl bras. They sit up high enough that its only the very front taking the most beating. Many customers will get the full front done, whole hood and fenders plus the bumper and side mirrors, but this can easily double the cost. Partial coverage will stop about 90% of the damage so to get that extra 10% runs 50% more.

Ford did a really smart thing by covering the top sides of the bed with plastic panels, i get a lot of requests for that area on other pick ups.
