Has anyone made rear fender skirts? I wonder how difficult it would be after starting with a fender flare design. Might help the hybrid guys highway fuel economy better match their city rating.

Only on MTC forum folks!

Sure wouldnt here these kinds of ideas on Ram or Taco forum.

As to the concept. Not sure it would work with out a narrower rear tire.

If you started with a flare, but just continued the material down (after flaring out) the result would look like an old school (from the 30' and 40's) fender skirt. No wheel issues at all. Not exactly the most aerodynamic solution though.

Thinking a bit more, I would imagine a plastic piece that connects to the wheel well liner to cover the opening would be the easiest. The plastic fasteners stop at about as low on the wheel as I would go anyways.

The most modern car I can think of that had fender skirts was the Honda Insight.
I think the step side trucks from way back look ok.

I cannot visualize the Maverick looking good with fender skirts.

The Mavs square front end probably does more to kill aerodynamics than rear end.

My mind is telling me "No-go!", but show me a Mav with one and I'll know for sure :)

EDIT: anything is doable ... i believe that ... just don't know this would be something i'd try.

This would look hideous. Here is a modern car commonly seen with skirts. Try not to throw up.

I think one issue is that it would have to be very solid on there with modern highway speeds. That and they were also prone to coming off for various reasons. I think that fancy brand of wheels that has those discs on em would be the best bet. Also lowering it.

Definitely can't go with trying to make it part of the body in color scheme. I was thinking a black of some sort to kinda hide it.

I once rode in the back of a late 1960s Olds 98 that had fender skirts. We launched that thing over a short bridge with a steep approach angle at 60 mph and landed like a ton of bricks at which time the fender skirts went flying off the car. Good times 😬

Played around a bit with the wheel well on some image editor. Learned/confirmed a few things.
A) body color looked absolutely horrendous
B) black was much better (with extending the matte black lower bit) but still "off putting"
C) an image of the wheel (vinyl overlay) on the cover would work well enough to not draw attention when stationary
D) clear would be the best option but you would have to keep it clean

Only, ONLY if you add some curb feelers.
Fender skirts would look really stupid without those.
