Does weight in the bed need to be considered when calculation towing capacity with a trailer? Nothing specific, just curious.

No. Just remember that you always need 10% trailer load on the hitch, and that is included in your total bed weight. Also don't forget to add in the passenger weight, which in some cases is considerable ;^P

Ill could tak that passenger comment personally:).
So with a 1500 lb bed capacity and a 2999 lb towing capacity.
2 @200 lb passengers 400
1500 lb trailer weight 150
Total 550
So there would be a max on 950 in the bed and still tow a 1500 lb trailer. Right?

No, payload in truck does not directly effect towing.
BUT....Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating must be considered.
Payload is everything in the truck not supplied by Ford. Yes, all the crap you add in accessories, each and every person in the cab, and anything in the bed. This is what is overlooked often.
Add a towed item and you have to know the weight of the Maverick as it will be as it drives down the road. Subtract that weight from the vehicles GCWR and you have the weight you can tow assuming you are not over the tow rating of that Maverick.

Thank you. Makes sense.

The GCWR is a great call out. I suspect most people who are close to the max trailer weight (2k or 4k) are over GCWR. The dry weight of the Maverick is about 3700 give or take a couple hundred pounds. Add in the driver and it is very close to the 6k or 8k GCWR without any passengers, luggage, tools etc.

Yep, GCWR for most Mavericks is right around 6000 lbs. 4K tow package Mavericks have a GCWR of just over 8000 lbs.
So, on an average Maverick towing a 2000 lbs trailer means you and your gear better weight in under about 300 lbs!
Of course many will go way over the GCWR without realizing it.
