Maverick fits Four 26" Mountain Bikes

Nicely done! How did you make the bike rack and what's holding it to the front of the maverick?

I used 1/2" PVC pipe with slip fit 90° and "Tee" fittings. Glued it all together once I got the proper fit.

No need to secure the bike rack to the bed. It's only there to hold the bikes upright. When I secured the bikes down with straps, the downward force on the bikes holds the rack down as well. I take it out and put it in the back seat while we're riding, that way it doesn't get stolen.

I figured I would share this because I couldn't find anywhere else that this has been done.

So.. when I ordered my Mav a year ago, I was curious if I could fit Four 26" Mountain bikes in the bed, without taking the tires off OR Hanging them over the tail gate. I searched through these forums and the internet, but didn't see anybody that had done it.

I didn't want to use a tailgate pad because eventually sand and debris will get between the pad and the gate and wear away at the paint.

I didn't want use the 2x6 with a bracket for the front fork method either, as not all my bikes have quick release tires and that's just an extra step I'm trying to avoid.

I did see where people who own larger trucks have used a homemade PVC "bike rack" and thought that might work, but without the truck I wasn't unable to gauge the length and width of the bed to see if they would all fit. So I waited.

Well... I got my Mav 4 months ago, but I've been working, traveling, doing family things, etc.. you know, life. Anyway, I finally got around to putting the bikes in the bed and measuring everything out. It looked like it would work, so I made the plan and bought all the PVC and fittings, then got to work making a "Bike Rack" for the bed.

Turns out, it works perfectly. You can fit Four 26" Mountain bikes in a Maverick with ease! I had to stagger the bikes front/back/front/back, so the handle bars don't entangle with each other. Also, with the tail gate in the "half up" position, it actually pushes the bikes into the bike rack, holding them into place better.

My Wife and our two kids (both teenagers) went bike riding today and the Maverick is the perfect truck to accomplish this.

Thank you for posting this with great pics. Likewise, I don't want to hang my bikes over the tailgate. I travel with only two mountain bikes similar to yours and with two, I bunge one to each side and adjust the tailgate as you did.

I can fit a 27.5 and a 29 on my tailgate pad with my Backflip bed cover fully folded back.

Any pictures of the rack without the bikes? I'm trying to figure out if you have vertical braces on the back side. From the pictures, I can't see them and it just look like the tops are plugged and rest against the top rear corner.

personally I'd be more concerned about pedals scratching the paint on the bed without any spray in bedliner but everyone has their own priorities I guess

I agree. I don't want a scratched, rusted truck bed to deal with down the road.

If the SIBL delays my build in any way, shape or form I'll tell my dealer to lose it (and the hard tonneau cover) then simply get them done locally.

I chose not to have Ford put in the SIBL as it was constrained at the time of order, and I wanted my truck. I plan on having Line X spray one in eventually. They sand the entire bed and fix any rust anyway before application, so I'm not worried about scratches in the bed.

Also, Line X has a lifetime guarantee, and can be taken to any line X store in the country. I would much rather Line X repair any defects in the SIBL then any Ford Dealership repair a Ford SIBL.

I built a very similar 4-bike rack for my Maverick's truck bed as well, also using PVC! I just took it for its maiden voyage fully loaded this past weekend for a bikepacking trip in New Hampshire. We were even able to keep the majority of the bike bags on which was very convenient. Bikes definitely had to be staggered front to back but I was pleasantly surprised at how well they all fit.

I made adjustments to those plans and 1) used smaller diameter pipe and 2) built 4 tire slots instead of 3 slots, since the person who made those original plans built them around much thicker tires than I'll ever transport in my truck. Looks great! Pretty much exactly the same. I used 90° elbows on the 4 bottom corners so it would fit flush against the side, but same same..

I really like how when the tail gate is in the half-up position, it pushes the bikes forward into the rack. and holds them in better.

You think Ford would have advertised this and made a bike rack themselves. Not that making one DIY is hard, just seems like a missed marketing / money opportunity.

if you buy a decent quality tailgate pad this is not a thing. I have a tailgate pad sat on the back of my Mav most of the summer, I have seen no issues with the paint whatsoever, nor with the countless trucks I've had before with the same set up.

my Fox Overland medium tailgate pad has been on and off a whole bunch the past year as I need to use my soft tri-fold tonneau sometimes to carry cargo.

it has a soft microfiber plush inner side and I've never seen any debris build up under it, or any scratches. the bikes are also very secure when velcroed to it. I'm sure the OP did a great job, but I'm even more sure that those bikes could move given then right bump and/or cornering forces. It's also 5 seconds (yes) per bike to load and unload a tailgate pad.

I just hauled 4 E Mtn bikes to the beach and back last week for our vacation. Just folded up two blue moving blankets and draped them over the tailgate and laid the bikes in the bed with the front wheels of the bikes hanging over the tailgate. Super quick and easy to load the bikes, no straps needed, no racks needed, etc. Actually had two Corn hole boards laying in the bed that the back tires of the bikes had to lay on top of.... Could have easily thrown in a 5th bike if needed as well. These were full suspension 29 incher bikes too btw. No scratches, no problems.

Part of why I wanted the maverick was for the ease of throwing a blanket over the tailgate and tossing a bike over the tailgate vs messing with a bike rack or any other complicated way of hauling the bikes.

And btw, I considered a tailgate pad, but at close to $200 for a proper one that fits such a narrow tailgate ( vs some of the cheaper ones meant for a full size truck ) I decided against it. I have a pad already I have used on my F150 / F250 and I don't like leaving it on the truck. I put it on to use for hauling the bike then take it off when I am back home... And I don't like how I have to fish 3 straps under the tailgate to strap down the pad and secure it. I already had the moving blankets so gave that a try and it works great and it is just as simple as folding it a certain way and laying it over the tailgate. Takes 20 seconds tops.

looks like you're blocking the rear view camera? my fox has inserts to fill the gap where the tailgate handle and camera are, but I don't use them. if I pull the pad down a little bit, just rearward of perfectly centered on top of the tailgate, I can see out of the backup camera normally with no bikes, and fairly well with 1-2 bikes if I angle the tires outward like you have done. (passenger side pointing the other way.)

I get that. Several friends I ride with do this, also. They are worried about a tailgate pad being stolen because even with the tailgate locked, you can just slide it off.

If someone steals mine I guess I'll reconsider, but I don't worry about it a bit and never expect anything to happen. I've had several other friends go 10+ years with a tailgate pad and never an issue.
