The charcoal vapor canister on the EB is located under the LH floor board at roughly the same clearance as the exhaust system. With only 66 miles on my new Maverick it appears that I kick up a road item, hitting the canister. The felt shield offers very little protection in this area. To replace the cracked plastic canister is $850. Most vehicles have the canister located higher, tucked up next to the gas tank. With the current low clearance location, is just asking for trouble. I plan on making a steel shield for the new replacement canister. EB owners may want to look at trying to protect this expensive and venerable plastic canister.

'No' Typically any thing you hit on the road is not cover by warranty. About the only thing is for tires, which you can by insurance for, from the tire dealer/manufacture.

My Daytona doesn’t have a charcoal canister, it’s older then charcoal, what is the point of this canister? Can it simply be bypassed or is that a bad idea?

$850!? I'd glass up that old one and make it extra thick on the bottom.

It's an emission control device to contain/absorb fuel vapors vented from the tank.

Must be real old. My 1976 pontiac Trans am had a canister,. It collects fuel vapor from gas tank . Real OLD cars had a vented tank. Like 1973 or 74 and older. Gas tanks have been sealed for a LONG time now.

To OP wow 850, holy crap like Tom said glass it up and reuse it,. No way I would spend 850. Maybe look into the part number and see if other vehicles use one with same part number and junk yard it.

#me too.
I haven't been able to bring myself to paying Ford $750 to do this repair yet. This felt skid plate is a joke. Somebody please stamp some out of steel or sell us some rock sliders.
I'm going to try the fiberglass method of plugging too. I hope I can get the mounting tab back on their well enough to hold it for the foreseeable future.

Parts Dept. gave me PN LX6Z9D653F $459 for the evap canister
and LX6Z6775R $97.17 for the "under shield".
Service Dept. gave me PN NZ6Z 9D289 A $207 for the evap canister and PN NZ6Z 9B007 AA $45 for the "under shield".

Why the difference?

Service department wants $725 for evap canister replacement and $200 for under shield replacement.

O'Reily's website says they're $269 and special order...

I wonder if any of the skid plates on the FX/4 would protect this?

I could be wrong, but isn't that the same or very similar to what is used on the Escape? It would be a half hour job max to change it once you got one off eBay or a junk yard.

The parts dept gave you a part number with a base of 9D653 which is for an evap canister. The service dept number with a base of 9D289 is for a vapor management valve tube assembly.

Not sure why service got that number. If they asked the parts dept for a price on a evap canister they got the wrong number.
