I hated scrubbing off the protective coating (some green crap) when we sold and mounted whitewalls. And I remember buying some once, and the seller didn't clean it off, so I had to when I got home.

Then there was the red side wall tire. First time I remember seeing them was on a 64 Tempest GTO that was just like this one except it was a four barrel automatic 389 and not as was sung about this one, "three deuces and a four speed, and a 389", that my friend's parents bought from the Pontiac dealership after they used in at the local drag strip a few times in late 1964 to showcase this new Muscle Car. His dad finally stopped letting him drive it. Replaced too many back tires!

My Dad’s 70 Sedan DeVille had gangsta whitewalls….I miss the car I learned to drive in, I can park anything because of that Cadillac….

Same here, I took my drivers test with a 71 Deville, even the instructor was amazed how I parallel parked it so easily. Honestly I can still park my 73 Sedan DeVille easier than my Maverick.

They were called red line tires. A set came on my red 1971 TR6 with wire wheels. I think they are still available from Coker Tire Co.

For cheap thrills someone should order a set of port-a-walls to try on their Mav. They're easy to install as all that's required is deflating the tire enough to slip them between rim and tire and then inflating them. They were popular back in the day to dress up black walls. They also have the thin red lines which I would consider for my iconic silver Mav.
