On longer trips I find I'm overcharging my phone. Considering a dongle. But also... has anyone considered doctoring a usb cable so it connects but doesn't charge?

On a side note: I"ve always thought there should be an app that limits charging to a percentage. So, you go to sleep but first plug your phone in, but you set it so when it reaches 80% it stops charging or something like that. Seems like something you could create easily and sell widely.

Some phones do have a setting like that. Mine allows me to set it to 85% max charge.
As far as the wireless AA dongle, I'm not sure. I came here to look at recommendations lol.

Cool... but it seems to me this would be an easy app to create for everyone on an android.

What phone do you have? For a fair number of years more recent Android phones should in fact do what you are asking. I'm pretty sure its an Android OS feature rather than custom phone manufacturer software.

Also, what makes you think it is overcharging?

I've owned pretty much every android phone manufacturers phones. Galaxy, Pixel, Moto, you name it. I've never seen that feature. Unless it's called something that doesn't compute in my head.

As for how I know it's because in order to maintain battery health the experts recommend never charging past 80%. But plugged in on a few hour trip I'm at 100% within an hour or so.

I've been using the Motorola A1 for over a year, works great
I've got this same device waiting on my Mav, has the best reviews, seamless connections once setup.

Same here. It disconnects a bit more than I like but reconnects in 10 seconds. Once you are using AA, it's difficult to go back. Really enjoy it. I asked the same question and the MA1 was recommended.

Or they may do the trick they use for EVs where 100% isn't really 100% charged but some reduced 'usable capacity'.
I would guess this isn't the case in phones. An EV is a big ticket item where everyone is suspicious about the battery life. "Faking" 100% in their case makes sense. "Alleviate objections by making batteries last longer."

But phones these days (while still expensive) are nearly disposable. You buy one, fuck up the battery after a few months, live with the shortened life of your battery for a year or so, then buy another. In the case of the phones manufacturers and retailers pretty much WANT their lives to be cut short so they can sell you another... and another.
