Ford Maverick Has Ford kinda abandoned the whole FITS thing? IMG_20230516_104009642_HDR

Picked up a simple FITS hook from my local library today, they 3D print for free (really involved prints get a small material fee), got the pattern from Thingiverse, and I know Ford initially released about 1/2 dozen CAD files, but was thinking about how there really has not been the explosion of ideas/patterns that I would have expected. Kinda thought Ford would go further with some designs themselves. The offerings on Thingiverse seem mostly variations of the same things.

Actually thought it was a neat concept to start with, just surprised it hasn't produced more ideas.

No offense to Ford, but the location of the FITS slot on the back of the center console makes no sense. Anything you put there now takes up space for the center passenger. How about putting the slots on the doors, or in the bed, or in that cubby next to the screen?

Oh, and you never sent me my bag of free FITS accessories (not that I wanted them)

Agree that a lot of Ford's design ideas with the Maverick (water bottle holder in door, FITS locations, etc) were good ideas but the execution didn't quite live up. When you look at the things coming from @Muslogy Auto and others are coming up with, it's obvious it'll be the aftermarket to fully exploit the potential as opposed to expecting Ford to really follow through with anything new since the truck has been launched.

Yeah I think it would have been smart for them to be around thew 4 corners of the ceiling and on the b-pillar and a few behind the seat. Maybe even in the bed plastics.

We havent gotten ours yet but a buddy of mine is into the 3d printing and I will probably have him make us some stuff eventually.

I think it was sort of a stupid marketing idea. Sort of like having the QR code on the cubby doors like that alone will have customers flocking to buy a Maverick.

Or you do what my 7 year old did, and step on my brand new FITS double cupholder while climbing into the front seat from the back like the cupholder was meant to be a step.... That cupholder lasted about 2 hours. I assume if I put in my FITS garbage can she will do the same thing within a week, even after feeling super bad about killing my cupholder.

I think the FITS thing is kind of ahead of its time

there isn't a big enough market for people to have their own 3d printers
and the cost to pay someone to make 3d stuff is still high

and i agree with the locations - they could of put them in more unique spots - under the dash for cb radios/laptop holders or on the ceiling for aux switches etc

One complication is that the most common material that is used for 3d printing is call PLA which is likely what the library used. The problem with that material is that it will not hold up well in a car on a hot day and it will soften and deform if not actually melt. There are other materials which are more heat resistant but they can be more difficult to work with especially on an inexpensive home 3d printer.

I think a lot of people broke the cupholder. If you're lucky, it was the cupholder itself, I've seen pics of where the moulded mount side gets ripped. When that happens, nothing FITS. ;)

I'll keep an eye on my little hook (if I ever get a truck to put it in!), I'm in Bama and inside vehicle temps can get downright brutal in the summer. I'm only planning to have it hold a small trashbag I already have in my current truck. I was just super impressed to find out the library offered that service for free. Libraries are an underappreciated national treasure.

what about the ones under the rear seat?

TBH, If I get a Mav, I might relocate the USB plugs in the back to the side of the console, just got to make sure the seat will not hit a cable if one is in the USB port.

It was nothing but a marketing gimmick, just like the water bottle thing in the door.
