That seems questionable

Is it me or does anyone else stack their lumber shortest on the bottom and longest on the top? If you put the 8 ft boards in first they will help support the 10 ft boards which will in turn help support the 12 ft boards. That way the 12 ft boards are not swaying so much. One strap in the front of the bed, one in the back. Good to go.

At least in the bed. On a trailer longest to shortest.

Any reason not to haul these (still properly strapped in, of course) with the tailgate affixed in the halfway up position?

Not only a touch more secure (IMHO) but also easy to check on them by periodically glancing out the rear window.

I’ve only hauled 8 footers in mine so far. I had the tailgate at the mid position. Two straps and zero movement. Other than that it’s been mulch and bikes. Looking forward to all the other things that I find and transport though!

Nice! I wouldn't be afraid at all. I have a HD, Lowes, Menards, and Sutherlands all within 2-5 miles. I once strapped a 2x6x16 treated board to the roof rack of an Explorer. That was quite sketchy, but I made it without incident.

This is my favorite if I had to do it more than once a year.

Put the longest boards in the center of bed to minimize the arc the back end of the board travels to the side when making a turn. Also do not turn more sharply than necessary. The pivot point is the center of the rear axle.
