I thought you would want to see what can happen with your FWD Maverick trying to pull its 3500 lbs of weight up a slick road like the FWD Explorer in this video, which normally is considered a capable vehicle.

also, the weight of the rear (third row seats) doesn't make this a good comparison. The Maverick has most of it's weight in front of the rear wheels etc....

I would like to see the same test with AT tires on. A lot of Mavericks weight is over the front tires unlike the Explorer.

Sorry, I tried watching but after 30 seconds of nothing noteworthy happening I clicked away. People have short attention spans for stuff like this; ya gotta get to the point!

I just kept clicking ahead till the video really started but you do have a point. That is why TLDR was created. LOL

Drove in Park City conditions and worse, plenty times (grew up in Wyoming). AWD is helpful but most people survive just fine with FWD and my parents grew a RWD pickup recently.

Don't attack, just showing an example of what can happen. Yes there is more weight toward the front of a Mav but pulling 3500+ lbs of vehicle weight up an icy slope is tough for any vehicle, even with snow tires. I have chains but with my AWD badge, I have never been forced to chain up and go through that misery even with all these big Utah snow storms this year. There is a pretty good incline going up I80 from Salt Lake. I see people pulled over or paying someone $40 to put chains on for them. The roads have never been a problem for my AWD during a white out.

If you drive in mostly flat snow covered areas, FWD with snow tires is fine. Yes, you will survive with FWD in Park City or Telluride but you will have to chain up. AWD is way more fun to drive too. I plan on getting a tune to over 300 HP when the warranty is up. Yes there is a speed limit but no limit on how fast you get up to that speed on the open road.

Focusing on mpg won't really matter if you own neither. Probably half of the people with hybrid orders will not get scheduled due to capacity. Sorry to all of you waiting, I know how hard it is.

Hwy mpg of the AWD is not much diferent even with way more passing power and capability in mud, snow, and light off road. At 2 trucks for the price of one full size, maybe get one of each over time if you can. It's better than waiting for a truck that may never get delivered.

Weight distribution makes a huge difference. That Ford Explorer also weighs a thousand pounds more than the Maverick.

I've been driving front wheel drive vehicles in snow and ice for decades, and literally never had an issue with much steeper hills than that.

Doesn't seem like a AWD vs FWD "apples to apples" comparison. That Explorer driver had some things working against him (or her)... Looks like summer tires on there. The tires also look to have fairly worn tread. Lost inertia going up the hill (got very slow / stopped), whereas you were driving at a reasonably "aggressive" speed going up the hill.

Do you think if you drove your AWD Maverick up that hill as tentatively as the Explorer driver did, and came to a near-stop at that point, you would be able to continue up the hill? Also, do you have snow tires?

[Edited to add:] Just saw your last reply. You're right about there not much difference in MPG if you're already getting an Ecoboost model. If I were going with Ecoboost, I would definitely order both AWD and 4K towing. But I live where there isn't much show, and mileage is king for me, so I'll be holding out for the hybrid. (I do wish there was an AWD hybrid offering, though!)

But also, that's why we salt our roads in the winter around these parts. :p
