Does anyone have an authoritative explanation for the 200 Nm torques specification?

Sounds like you're used to non-truck lugnuts, larger fasteners require more torque in order to achieve the necessary tension to fasten the lugnut. Basically you're applying torque to the fastener to achieve a certain amount of tension. Your Maverick has very truck like lugs at M14x1.5, the same size used on the F150. In order to achieve the required amount of tension on the lug which is much thicker than most car lugs which are typically something like M12x1.25 you need more torque, hence the 148 lb-ft requirement.

Edit I mixed up Nm and Foot pounds, ignore my stupid error.

Good explanation, the guys at the tire shop thought it was because I had the Hybrid. Figured that had nothing to do with it.

OP, they put it up to 200Nm? It's 148Nm in the manual for my 22 Mav.

Be very careful here with your designated specs. The manual states 148 lb-ft which is the equivalent of 200nM. If you mix this up you're going to potentially wind up with either seriously under or over-torqued lug nuts

Check again, the 148 is the ft/lb load...

I do it a little different. I loosen the lugs and tighten them by hand. Still crank on them but no where near the specs. That way I can remove them if I need to on the road to change a tire. Never had a problem with any of my vehicles doing this.

I have an F250 that I do the same thing with and haul full beds of firewood in and the wheels never fell off.

Glad for this thread. For some strange reason, thought the torque was 80 lb. Have checked 3 times and retighten 1 of 20 once, but guess will have to torque them up some more. Did this in December, when changing to winter tires and rims.

Do you keep a torque wrench in your truck in case you have to put on the spare?
What does a torque wrench have to do with installing a spare tire temporarily?

If I need to install a spare I tighten it to what feels like ~150 lt/lbs, drive to have the original tire repaired and reinstalled, and check the torque (and tire air pressure) when I get home...

I guess you have far more mechanical experience than most people then, I wouldn't have a clue what 150 foot pounds feels like. It's either tight or it not. :ROFLMAO:
