If you are looking for a inexpensive high mileage light duty truck fwd is the answer.
* $3,000 for AWD is way to much.
* Most people could get by with the FWD because the weight of the drivetrain is directly over the drive tires.
* RWD trucks need 4WD because there is little weight in the bed over the drive tires.
* If you add 5k with the AWD, EcoBoost, and tow package you might as well get a Ranger and get over 7,000 lbs towing.
* FWDs are lighter and give you more room in the interior with a flatter floor.
* Ford stopped making FWD cars so the Maverick is basically a economy car with a bed that holds 1,500 lbs..
* The 20k 40 mpg Maverick will sell like hot cakes!
Except a Ranger optioned similarly to my Maverick is north of $9,000 more expensive. And I have a boat that’s 2,500#’s which rules out the Hybrid but does not necessitate the Ranger.

FWD. Hybrid and I would never ever need AWD. But if AWD was offered on the Hybrid I’d probably sucker myself into getting it and come up with reasons to justify my decision afterwards (very good at that).

AWD because of snow / ice and thought the heavy duty radiator and trans cooler, even if not towing, was a goood idea. Wanted hybrid with awd, but no go for now……

My 2008 Prius has 135,000 miles. Our 2005 Escape hybrid AWD has 98,000 on it and is beginning to rust. The durability and mileage of the hybrid AISIN CVT influenced the decision to go with a base XL for a commuter car. It will be replacing a mitsubishii mirage that gets 47 mpg with a taiilwind at 55 mph (base model, 205,000 miles) We have a passel of big fuel drinking 4x4 pickups to move the heavy stuff short distances and plow the snow.

I chose AWD: 1. Got hooked on AWD when I had a BMW X3 and drove in the torrential rains we get in FL, was able to drive fearlessly. I want that flexibility on demand all the time! 2. I wanted the 4K tow package for flexibility to haul a rental *Trailer for hauling or *RV trailer for enjoying life! 3. Possible resell value (prolly will not see it though) 4. I was going with the EcoBoost engine and "what the hell" may as go all out as I could!

FWD, mainly because where I live AWD is not required.

The 4 wheel dr option was too pricey. Besides driving on AWD is a better option for any reason. 😃

Hybrid FWD. I want the MPG's but still need the bed (small as it may be) for deliveries. I have an F150 4x4 for all of my towing, and good winter tires are better than AWD on all-season tires. I'm just waiting for Tire Rack to load the Mav's pics on there so I can pick my winter wheels!

AWD because it's better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

It's a much-proven fact that AWD offers little to no benefit (over FWD) in snow other than in very specific situations (ie. starting up a steep incline from a stop, like a driveway). A FWD vehicle with snow tires is far more capable in the snow than the same vehicle with 4 drive wheels on all-seasons. Off-roading or stoplight drag racing, absolutely AWD provides an advantage.
Yep, in snow and ice, it's all about technic and ability. I used to laugh at the folks in AWD vehicles I had to drive by that were stuck spinning all four wheels and going nowhere. For some strange reason, they would flip me off as I went around them with my FWD Mazda 6.

I never had a problem the 4 years I lived in MN. Knowing how to drive in snow is more important that having AWD.
Yeah. 20 years driving FWD in MN. I used to take my Saturn SC2 down some pretty gnarly access roads on the North Shore.

If the new Ranger has a inexpensive hybrid that tows 7,000 I will be very upset. Have you noticed there is very little info on the new Ranger. It seems like they are waiting until the Maverick first wave of delivery’s have been made And we can’t switch our orders. Maybe I’m paranoid.
