Picked up my Lariat today and the dealer tried to sell me a 7 year 100k warranty for $3400. Would you buy an extended warranty? Is that price reasonable?

another option was to buy an extended maintenance contract that covers all scheduled maintenance for the first 100k miles for $3000. Is that worth it?

No I will get rid of both of my Mavericks prior to them being 3 years old. So far I have no major complaints about the trucks just will be trading or outright selling one of them possibly both of them in a year and a half and buy ing a Toyota Tacoma hybrid.

No, there's a lot of mark up in them. I was given the hard sell when I purchased my Maverick. They started out at a high price, and I kept telling them no. They kept coming down in price for the same coverage. I still kept saying no right up to the time they printed the contract.

If they're haggling that much in price and negotiating to get you to buy it, what does that tell you?

Also, consider this. If you buy an extended contract for five year, three of those run consecutive with your current 3/36 Ford warranty, so you're only getting two additional years of warranty. Not many people know that.

If you do decide to buy an extended warranty, also consider this. You are paying extra tax and extra insurance and extra financing on that warranty.

Whatever you do, DO NOT buy any extended warranty from any company that sends you mail. They pay the DMV to get your information and send you a notice to buy an extended warranty. And stay the heck away from Car Shield! They've had numerous law suits and complaints against them for non-payment!

No. That's money that could be used for my next new vehicle. As long as there is a car shortage, I think driving a new vehicle for a couple of years and getting most or all my money back when selling or trading makes sense to me.

I purchased a contract as well. Seeing some of the first model issues, glad that I did.

I am retired now and will not put a lot of miles on the Maverick(if I ever get it) since I do not have a commute and we have a different car for road trips. According to the Flood Ford online quote it will only cost about $900 for a 8 year 60k mile $50 deductible Ford Premium Care (their best) warranty so I will likely get it since we will likely not exceed 60k miles in 8 years.

This will also be my first Ford and it may not be as reliable as the brands I normally buy especially since it is a new model.

You can buy the extended warranty at any time up until your 3 year 36K mile warranty expires you can wait a year or two to decide but it may cost more the longer you have had the truck.

With any extended warranty be sure to read an understand all the details since they will not cover everything. Understand what happens with it if you sell your truck or it is totaled in an accident.

Non-manufacturer extended warranties are usually just a scam since if they are even still in business they may require you to use a dodgy mechanic that is an hour away and any repairs may take lots longer to be done and multiple visits.

Prepaid maintenance is really hard to justify since modern cars and trucks usually require little other than oil changes for the first 100k miles. Be sure to read the Maverick owners manual to see the recommended maintenance schedule.

Don't pay those prices if you do decide to get one! Here is one from Flood Ford - https://www.floodfordesp.com - and Granger Ford is supposed to be $50 cheaper. Either are almost half off what your dealer quoted.

I am sitting on the fence about getting one and really debating on the 8 yr/100k miles one or just going 6/75k. It comes down to your piece of mind.

I have purchased extended warranties on about 5 vehicles in the past. I usually keep my vehicles for a while plus I drive a lot, so 3/36 ends up turning into about a 1.75 years for me. To be honest I have never had a warranty pay for itself. I've had two that used a couple of minor things, the two that came closest to paying for themselves were both Fords.

A 2002 Ranger (purchased in 2006 with 22K miles) I think I paid $1000 for a 100K mile warranty and ended up with around $950 in repairs that were covered on it. The other a 2009 F150 (purchased in 2011 with 30K miles on it) and paid like $1200 for the 100K warranty and ended up at around $1100 in repairs. The other 3 were on Brand new vehicles (2 Honda's and a Nissan) and I don't I ended up using but $200 on two of them and none on the other.

To me it's about peace of mind, and I really don't want to have to pay for anything extra if I am still paying for the car. If you typically only keep your cars 2-3 years and you drive the average 12-15K a year you would probably be ok.

Nope. I picked up a 7/100k ($100 ded) from Granger. Cost was $1100, maybe less. Afterwards I was at a local ford dealer and had the service desk look up my VIN to confirm. There it was in the national Ford database. Valid at any Ford dealer in the USA.
