I'm wondering if you all with truck experience picking up mulch in a bed can tell me if the Maverick short bed is a bit too short for the loaders they generally use at a mulch yard.

I was looking at this video and I'm wondering if a standard (?) cubic yard loader arm thingee would actually be longer than the 4.5-foot bed? Or it would be so tight they'd have to get reeeeally close to the cab (damage potential)?

I was debating bagged pickup at the home store vs. a cheaper bulk pickup. I can also get it delivered but since I have a lil truck now...

It's fine. I just got two loads this past weekend with no issues. Most landscape supply companies sell by the yard and their loaders have 1 yd. buckets attached which is quite small.

Thanks much, do you use a tarp in the bed?

OP, ask your mulch provider what the width of their bucket is. Most are going to be at least 60". They can still load and let some spill over the tailgate. They will also see your truck and load the bucket high and heavy on the cab end..

If you use a ~12' tarp, lay 4' across the bed and hang it out of the side of the truck, load mulch, then pull the tarp up and over the mulch, then secure the tarp end.

Were you able to fit 1 or 2 yards per load?

A Maverick bed is approximately 55" x 55" x 20" ( minus the wheelwells). That's ~60,500 cubic inches, or about 35 cubic feet (again, minus the wheelwells) . 1 yard is 27 cubic feet. The bed would hold approximately 1.3 cu/yds (with the wheelwell volume heaped up in the center).

Assuming ~600lbs per yard, that's conservatively about 1000 lbs.

good luck....

One yard at a time will be. Thank you for the quick reply.

Was thinking next year after the truck arrives and is the correct season would try the tailgate level position for plywood and perhaps but a fabric in the corners of the tailgate. Don't have my truck but will that give you at least 6 inches for the 5 foot bucket?

Should be just fine. The ideal setup though would be with the bed extender and a big tarp. Tarp it from the roof to the bed then up and over the extender and down. Nice and wide tarp offset to the loader side and then fold it over and tuck in and strap when done.

Plan on getting a bed extender, but waiting until the truck arrives with the $210 towards the purchase. Think it went up $10 as thought it was $360 but the salesman convince me not to order it at the time.

There are some other potentially cheaper extender ($180) discussions here:
