Saturday night my hybrid maverick shut down on the highway and told me to pull over to a safe area as soon as possible.

I was merging into the highway, using eco mode and was accelerating slightly hard to get up to highway speed.

The car then lurched for a moment, said “Drive mode unavailable” and switched to normal, and the engine immediately shut off and went to electric only. It stayed that way for about a mile where it lost power and I stopped on the side of the highway.

I got out and popped the hood and looked for any signs of major failure but was unable to find anything.

After 5 - 10 minutes on the side of the road I tried to start it again but was presented with the same message. Shortly after that it successfully started up and I was able to get to my destination and eventually home.

I looked in the app when I was stuck on the side of the highway and it said high voltage system fault as well as Malfunction Indicator Lamp. The latter stayed on the rest of the night and part of the following morning when it eventually shut off. I’m planning on taking it into Ford after the holiday for service, but I hope they can troubleshoot it without the check engine light still on.

Has anyone heard of or seen anything similar?

If I remember correctly I believe someone else on this forum had a similar issue after harder acceleration…

I think I read the Hybrid battery is located under the vehicle and liquid cooled in a sealed container of some sort. Supposed to prevent overheating issues w/hybrid electrical?

Our used low mileage 2017 C-Max did this multiple times during the 8 months we owned it, starting with a maiden voyage my wife took across the country. She got stuck in a dealership in rural WV on a Friday night and couldn't get a rental. The dealership ran some tests, threw a new 12V battery in it, and she got back to the Midwest without a problem.

It happened a few more times while driving around town, but always after a longer run at speed on country roads or the freeway, when the 12V battery should have been getting plenty of recharging voltage. I was always able to "wake it up" by connecting a jump pack to the low voltage terminal connections under the hood, but in all cases, I didn't even need to turn the key. Just connecting the jump pack terminals lit the dash up right away.

The dealer struggled to find any answers, and blamed the issue on a past accident which was not disclosed at purchase. We paid to fix the last issue, offered the car to the dealership, and they bought it on the spot during that peak used car buying frenzy in 2021. I think they had it sold the following weekend.

Get a photo of the failure message in the instrument cluster when it happens! This will help the service advisor when they inevitably call Ford for help.

Unfortunately the high voltage side of the system can't be disabled to allow a "limp home" mode as it supplies the motor generators in the transmission. If they don't work the engine can't be started, transmit power to the wheels, or change gear ratios. The transmission design is absolute genius, but can't be used on non-hybrids for this reason.

Cheers.

It has happened to.me 3 times now, the latest was this past Friday. What you describe is what exactly happened to me, except I was already in normal mode and a tow truck icon also appeared on my dash. Scary as hell. I have an appointment with me dealer on Saturday I believe this is a serious matter Ford saw my original post on this site when it originally happened I'm April, they advise I take it to my dealer.

See airrun8 post. His was a transmission damper. Fixed the issue I believe.
