It is possible you inserted the nozzle too far into the easy-fill. If you do this the mouth of the nozzle rests against the fill neck wall and causes backpressure, kicking off the pump. It will also "splash" back out if you try and force it because that is the path of least resistance.

Think of it like this: If you have a mouth full of water and you blow it through a straw into a cup, it will come out fine. If you take the end of the straw and push it against the wall of the cup, and then try to blow, it won't work properly. Splash, backpressure, so on.

Outside of that, you could possibly have a bad purge valve or other venting paths are clogged. Not likely on a new truck.

Hey!
So I just filled my maverick up for the first time and I had a bit of an issue.

when filling it up the pump would shut off every 3 seconds. When I let go and continue (because I know I am on E)gas splashes back and onto the side of my truck. I’m not sure if it was user error or the Gas pump not jelling with the easy fill cap but I was wondering if anyone had this issue?
If so what did you do to fix it?

thank you!
On occasion I have a pump prematurely shut off. Some pumps will put out more gal/minute than others and I can usually cure problem by restarting pump at the lowest flow rate (not on maverick as I do not have mine yet. The newer stations particularly those with many pumps are apparently equipped with flow limiters that will flow only at a gal/min rate whether 1 pump or 20 pumps are being used. Some stations with 4-6 pumps apparently do not have that delivery control.

I've never had it happen, but I also tend to fill up very slowly... never depressing the handle fully. In fact I'd say I do it slower than the slowest pre-set. This ensure the tank is truly full and I don't have to worry about splash back. I have never like using the auto set feature.... I've seen those fail too many times after having own a convenience store with gas for 13 years. I use to have to keep spill kits because those thing will often fail to activate timely enough to stop from over filling.

I have had the problem with other vehicles. It seems to be gas station specific. Maybe filters in the pump are clogged.

There is a YouTube video about filling up hybrid cars. If you leave the door open to long it builds up with evaporation the charcoal filter is only so big.

Took my car in and a valve in the tank needs to be replaced. The part will arrive in 5-7 days.

This hasn't happened on my Maverick (only one fill up so far), but I've had it happen on two different occasions on my wife's '17 Escape. It seems to be something with certain pumps and the easy fill system.

I haven't had anything this serious happen with my 2015 Mustang but that easy fill intake is, shall we say, quirky. Sometimes, just going full flow with the pump is enough to get it to trigger the shut off. I have the fewest problems when I wait for ten, not five, seconds and go at about three quarters speed. Sure, it takes longer to fill but I leave a whole lot less irritated.
I usually refuel at 1/4+ remaining tank volume and use the slow speed fill rate. Some stations still have the pumps without the flow limiters and if you are the only person using any of the pumps you will get excessive flow.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I just had the same issue with my 2023 Hybrid and I think I know why. When I tried to fill the tank I had fuel spray and constant clicking off of the pump. I tried reinserting the gas nozzle a half dozen times. I think my issue is that I popped the gas lid and then drove a block to a gas station with a working and available pump. This was my first time to fill up, so hopefully it's not something more serious. Or it could just be Friday the 13th bad luck.
