I said earlier computer chips should be considered a strategic resource and treated accordingly.
They were 30 years ago until the Government had this great idea to buy commercial off the shelf to get costs down. They soon found out that they could get cheap parts from countries with low labor costs and no unions. Nothing political about this, just buy cheap products to keep Americans happy. Where is your truck being manufactured?

Agree, for the ones wanting it incomplete now , I hope you get yours asap but good luck dealing with the hassle in your future, I’ll continue to hold out until Ford can deliver what I wanted, ordered and will pay for at delivery. Come to think of it, your incomplete truck may allow me to get my complete truck sooner.
Your incomplete truck will just get sold at a huge ADM to someone who wants it and doesn't care about a few missing non-essential chips.

As the OP (although modified without consent by the administrator - whom BTW cannot or does not desire to clean up the potty mouth issue) there maybe 3 things to consider here.

1. There is no indication from Ford that the Maverick is included. Note that manufacturing of the Maverick has continued while other lines have been suspended for parts issues.
2. How will some bank or credit union feel about financing a partially built vehicle.
3. How will the insurance companies treat these trucks.

Remember that the VIN tells the full story of the truck - or will it in the future?

If Ford goes ahead with this it is a personal issue to accept or not accept the issue on delivery, My issue is not with Ford but I am concerned with trusting the dealer. I would suggest that anyone who accepts this go ahead and take the Ford - 0%/36m financing and not pay cash.

Im sure the “chips” are end items that ford could easily install. Should be complete plug and play components. Dealers are not going to get a box of just microelectronic chips to install.
Do these chips or modules have to be programmed and if so by who and at what point? I hear talks of factory modules becoming “alive”, this the programming getting installed? My 19 Escape has had problems with the wifi module to download updates….took several days to get running after installing new module due to so download speeds coming from Ford.

If this is the path Ford decides to take, as I said earlier, I would never sign any release of liability [paperwork.

But I would make sure there was an WE OWE YOU document included. Every Ford truck I've purchased (and Lexus, Subaru, etc.) has a form you have to sign during the paperwork phase that states what Ford/Dealer owes you. Items such as floor mats, bed lighting, dumb things like that. If they owe you certain module replacements that will have the missing chips, it NEEDS to be in the paperwork. Otherwise you won't have a leg to stand on down the road.

The VIN? That's a good point. What will that show when the Marti Auto Works buys the data form Ford down the road and decodes the VIN, or even your insurance company today. Or Carfax for vehicle histories.

Everything is based off the VIN. Now we are talking a "virtual" VIN representing a vehicle that changes content over time. And I'm not talking floor mats or a bed liner. I'm talking fundamental components of the vehicle that in normal times, would only come as equipped with those items from the factory.

Sheesh!

Ford is going to have to de-content its vehicles and figure out how to ship a "complete" vehicle with the parts they have. Upon further thinking about this, having a "virtual" VIN is going to be a nightmare for all involved.

In the meantime, any complete Hybrid Maverick the ends up for sale on a dealer's lot just went up in price by at least an additional $5,000.

Looks like I may have my Volvo C70 for a long, long time. As least it has a 2000 pound tow rating.

Has anyone looked at how GM is doing this? Lots of questions about insurance, registrations, agreements, etc that could be easily answered by looking at what GM has been doing for months now. Unless I’m misinformed and GM hasn’t started shipping trucks without some components.

Good point.

Unfortunately, GM does not make anything I would want to buy.

So they'll give the salsa and guacamole but you'll have to come back later for the chips? 🙃

Excellent. I would suggest anyone with major concerns should go research GMs policy. I’m sure there are plenty of forums like this one to get some answers.
