Just watched EE video on direct injection and was wondering if the 2.5 uses direct injection or port injection (or both). Anyone know?

"PORT"

The 2.5l Atkinson is sequential multiport fuel injection (SMFI) where fuel is pumped under pressure through a small nozzle into various points in the engine's air intake section, and the atomized fuel then enters the engine cylinders past intake valves where it burns during the combustion cycle.

Thanks for the response. I think I'm comfortable with as many injection points as Ford desires, as long as they're on the low pressure side of the intake valves.

Yeah, I’ve had DI subaru and honda. I was glad to see the hybrid isn’t just DI.
Toyota does it right with multipoint. I don’t want fuel injector issues or having to think so much about carbon buildup or fuel deluding the oil. China banned the sale of the Honda CR-V that has the DI turbo engine due to fuel delusion issues in cold climates. Port injection or port with DI just eliminated or reduces problems.

Most Toyotas are port and direct injected. It will run on DI, and use port to keep the valves clean.

exactly. As I said, they do it right with multipoint.

Hey, the repair bills aren’t in my imagination. Thankfully both were under warranty, but $2000+ fuel injector and the resulting catalytic converter needing replaced bill wouldn’t be fun for a new honda with 30,000 miles if i had to pay myself.
But Subaru and Honda are all-in on the DI for efficiency and emission gains it seems.

But yes, I do believe port injection will avoid injector issues, carbon buildup, and fuel getting mixed in with the oil.
I realize there are work-arounds with oil catch cans, modern oil, and having carbon buildup blasted out every so often, but again, it’s kind of like the DEF Diesel engines-added complexity and maintenance thanks to the wonderful dictators of the world.

A legacy design - thanks to its roots based on the Ford Escape hybrid. One of the reasons I wanted this engine :)

So glad the Maverick hybrid does not use GDI ( gas direct injection ). My Kia did and wow what a dirty engine. The oil in that engine was black as tar even at 3,000 mile changes. In order to reduce carbon build up the Kia owner's manual recommends a bottle of Techron added to the gas tank every 5k miles.

I new about carbon build up but the suit was new to me. Wow seems like early oil changes needed on direct inject engines. I always laugh at people who wait till 10K miles, now it seems like back to 3K for oi9l changes. . Glad I have a hybrid coming. No dumb direct injection. The video had all negatives so the positive MUST be better mpg? Doesn't seem like it would be but it must or why do it..

On the Kia forum many owners of GDI engines were installing catch cans.

If I owned an EB I'd do the same.
