So it is looking like I should have my vehicle sometime in late April and I’ve been thinking about my first mods. The first thing I want to do is paint the center bar on the grill in a gun metal gray to break up that sea of cheating looking plastic on the XL. I saw some do this on youtube but they had to disassemble the whole front of the to do it. I really don’t want to do that. Has anyone had any success painting it in in the truck? It looks like you can get under the edges of it to mask off it off. Also, what kinds of spray paint did you use and what type of prep was done? Thanks for the input.

Don't have a Mav yet, but I saw someone post some pics of paint matched front gill bars and headlights. As for the grill bar, the biggest issue I would have is that it would chip all the time from impacts. Not sure I want to deal with that headache ;)

I would be lying if that wasn’t a concern of mine as well. I know there are some higher quality paints out now that might work. Just looking for some folks to chime in with what has worked for them.

I suppose you could paint it, and then cover it with the 3m protection film ;)

I'd like to see the grill above the bars painted body color.

Nah, not if done properly. It'll be no more susceptible to chips than anything else on the front.

In fact, I've got chips on my hood already but grille is still golden.

Paint might be holding up fine but it doesn't look like the same can be said for the emblem.

Remember the xl grill is all one piece on the xlt the center bar is a separate piece
Seems kinda weird they would have a different grill for the XL, XLT and Lariat

If you think three different grilles is weird, look at the F-150. 11 unique grilles o_O Ford loves to differentiate the grilles on their pickup lines.

What's even funnier (IMO) is the last two generations, folks have flocked to the STX grilles (which is just a fancy XL version). I've seen STX (XL) grilles swapped onto Lariats and even Platinum. F-one-diddy folks just go crazy for one of the lower trimmed grilles it seems.
