Free Press Truck of the Year: Ford Maverick breathes new life into small pickups

https://www.freep.com/story/money/c...reathe-new-life-into-small-trucks/9031747002/

January 2, 2022

No automaker but Ford could have achieved the outsize success the little Maverick compact pickup has enjoyed from the first moment the public saw it.

Since the 1970s, automakers have tried to convince Americans to buy a truly compact pickup based on the same basic engineering as a compact car.

They failed. Miserably. The VW Rabbit pickup failed. The Chevy El Camino failed. The Dodge Rampage failed. The Subaru Brat failed. The Subaru Baja failed. Even Ford’s own Ranchero failed. Successive generations of American buyers snickered at the vehicles as too small and lacking the capability to be a “real” truck.

A pickup is nothing without authenticity. Only Ford, maker of the perennially best-selling F-150, had the credibility to bestow it, and even that seemed like a long shot before the Maverick’s persuasive design, creative features and sub-$20,000 base price wowed buyers.

The Maverick is Ford’s entry-level vehicle, but it escaped the sense of “this was the best you could do?” that haunted small cars like the Fiesta and Focus.

The Maverick looks and feels like a well-made tool. It was designed for clever personalization and DIY features that won’t bankrupt a first-time buyer. The cabin carries five in a pinch, and is positively roomy for two people and their gear.

Maverick production is sold out for months.

The Ranger and S10’s were successful but they eliminated them.
We had bought new 3 S-10 trucks ( 86, 91 and 94 ). Finally had to move to the full size Silverado to pull our small 5th wheel camper. The camper is gone bit our love for the S-10 truck remains. We were sorry that GM discontinued them. When Ford offered the Maverick for sale in early June we knew that we had found a better replacement for the S-10s with the extended cabs. As retirees, our priorities have changed and the Maverick checks ALL of the boxes!

I had a 95’ S10 with the 4.3. It was a great truck. Not so great on gas but it was basically a 350 minus 2 cylinders.

I still drive my '99 S-10 and would love to be able to buy a modern version. I simply love it. But at 250k miles it is time to move on. The Maverick checks all my boxes of what a modern version should be except for at least a 6' bed...and it is not a Chevy. Those are my compromises and I feel comfortable with both.

I can't wait to get my Maverick so I can put my S-10 to pasture, so to speak.

Had the S-10 Blazer with the 2.4 L 4x4 was ok but tranny went then engine blew a few months later. Sold it and bought a Nissan XE single cab, won't ever have another single cab again.

I know a lot of people like you. GM better come up with a quality product.

I drove a brand new 1984 S-10 blazer for 60K miles before getting rid of it. It was the biggest POS I’ve ever owned. Nothing like driving on the Capitol beltway in DC and having the thing just die for no apparent reason. Multiple trips to the dealer and they finally replaced a bad sensor with another bad sensor and finally got one in that worked. Then the transmission started leaking fluid. This was all after warranty. And that was the last GM product I ever owned or ever will.

Anything with Detroit in the name will be biased towards the big 3.
