Haven't read up on that Corolla Cross yet, but I imagine it's made as an entry level wannabe CUV like what Subaru did with the Cross Trek. Just take your smallest, cheapest to build platform and put some cladding and blacked out pieces on it and there you go. Back in the 1980s Toyota actually made a Corolla station wagon that wasn't too bad. In the 2000s they had the Matrix which was a refreshed take on the wagon (and also the sister car Pontiac Vibe) made at the joint venture Toyota/GM factory in Fremont, CA. I had a Vibe and it was bulletproof, economical and had a lot of flexibilty to carry odd loads inside by folding seats.A Renegade with a slightly longer wheelbase and a bed would be pretty sick. They already have a Plug-In version of that platform that would give Ford a serious run for their money. Their AWD (so called "4x4") and 4xE tech is also VERY good. It would be a serious contender, IMO.
As for Toyota, they have that new Corolla Cross (which is the most basic and boring thing to come to market in a long, long time), so I would imagine that the Corolla platform is adaptable enough to stretch a little further into a unibody pick-up as well. I'd prefer a less boring RAV4 pick-up, though.
Just goes to show Toyota can make multiple vehicles off same or modified platform if they want to.
