A Renegade with a slightly longer wheelbase and a bed would be pretty sick. They already have a Plug-In version of that platform that would give Ford a serious run for their money. Their AWD (so called "4x4") and 4xE tech is also VERY good. It would be a serious contender, IMO.

As for Toyota, they have that new Corolla Cross (which is the most basic and boring thing to come to market in a long, long time), so I would imagine that the Corolla platform is adaptable enough to stretch a little further into a unibody pick-up as well. I'd prefer a less boring RAV4 pick-up, though.
Haven't read up on that Corolla Cross yet, but I imagine it's made as an entry level wannabe CUV like what Subaru did with the Cross Trek. Just take your smallest, cheapest to build platform and put some cladding and blacked out pieces on it and there you go. Back in the 1980s Toyota actually made a Corolla station wagon that wasn't too bad. In the 2000s they had the Matrix which was a refreshed take on the wagon (and also the sister car Pontiac Vibe) made at the joint venture Toyota/GM factory in Fremont, CA. I had a Vibe and it was bulletproof, economical and had a lot of flexibilty to carry odd loads inside by folding seats.

Just goes to show Toyota can make multiple vehicles off same or modified platform if they want to.

Yep, you're right, never liked the platform for the Patriot, Compass, Dodge Calibre, Mitsubishi Lancer & Outlander, nor Dodge Avenger or Chrysler Sebring, especially with CVT. All based on the same under performing platform. But I did like the Patriot squared off styling. At least the design of it lent it self to what the little SUV is. It was a fairly low cost with low expectation, entry level vehicle. Too bad Jeep didn't actually put Jeep running gear with the Patriot.
I drove a Jeep Patriot as a rental (was brand new with 2k miles on it). I don't know what trim level it was, but that thing had the most underpowered engine, worst transmission and most uncomfortable seats I have ever experienced in a vehicle. Swore off the jeep brand after driving that thing, the experience was so bad.

I know what you mean. I purchased a 2008 Chrysler 300 mid level trim and a 2008 Patriot top level trim, at the same time. I was planning on driving the Patriot and letting my wife have the 300—until I drove the Patriot. Loud and terrible road noise, probably caused by the off road tires. That's what I get for getting a 4WD. The leather was nice along with other things, but I started driving the 300. My wife made me trade the Patriot, with about 2000 miles accrued, in on a Chrysler Town & County Van.

When you look at images of the Montana, it is more similar in design to the Santa Cruz. Can't say I am really a fan. I think the truckish image of the Maverick is a large part of it's appeal. Montana is also a 2 door.

It depends on the specs.

Or that HHR-like vehicle (SSR?) that was like an HHR El Camino. It was sold for a couple of years 15-20 years ago. Help me out, someone?

2003-2006, though it looks a lot like the HHR, it has no parts compatibility and is instead based on the Trail Blazer.

I find it interesting how this design from Chevy polarizes us—all based on subjectivity. For me, I love the design, but when I sat in one, the bottom of the side window came up to my chin, and I didn't find much height adjustment. I know I'm short, but I felt it was kinda ridiculous and a design flaw. Also, Chevy fell way short on power and handling on the UTE. But the overall balance of the design is cool...as long as you are looking at it from the outside.

yeah, it's pretty for pretty sake, not real useable as a truck, not a comfortable place to live, and way too heavy for any acceptable performance. the later LS2 was better, but its a case were the design, engineer and finance teams just couldn't agree.

Toyota still makes a Corolla wagon, but it is not available in North America. I had a Pontiac Vibe too. Nice car.

I saw a similar video. It was one of those random images with a computerized voiceover, which is always annoying and why having a dislike count on YouTube is a good thing…

A GM competitor is objectively a good thing. Competition in the marketplace will lead to better and more diverse products for the consumer. That said, the Maverick does three things right: price, fuel efficiency, and size. If GM puts out a small truck that is competitive in those areas, Ford will have market pressures to keep the price low, develop better hybrid and electric technology, and do more fun things with the size.

All that said if it looks like this, I’m not worried for Ford.

What a joke looking thing. They wont sell many in the states. The thing with GM is they are so big you cannot go head to head with them. You have to outflank them. Ford did this with maverick. I cant imagine you could even do anything with this to make it look good.

The Montana will no doubt appeal to GM people.
Awhile back our observation on the Chevy HHR was that it was a PT Cruiser for people who'll only drive a car with a bowtie.
I bought an HHR LS wagon 2.2 5 speed new back in 2008. I needed cheap transport that can take up to 5 people and get good mileage. It's not a bad vehicle. I have logged 140K in 13 years with it. Still the original clutch, been thru a few sets of tires, brake pads, shocks n struts. I run the snot out of this thing. Keeping it as a spare car when I get my maverick. I couldent pass it up when the dealer couldent sell it with a standard trans to anybody else. I picked it up for $13,815.43 out the door. It had an $18,000 window sticker. Liability insurance is $150 a year, and tag/reg fees are $75. It will make a great beater.

they won't sell any in the states, GM has repeatedly stated that the Montana is strictly for the South American and African markets and will never be sold state side.

The Aussies had the right idea. It's the regular cab/manual/long bed Maverick that everyone wants, but way worse on fuel.
