There's no reason to doubt Ford's 13.8 claim.
My Escape Hybrid's manual says I have a 14.3 gallon tank. The car thinks it's more like 14.4, even if it never admits it...

You see, the car never reports more than 13.66 gal. used. The pump may be putting in as much as 1 gal. more than the car thinks it used. Note the 5% mileage error; the car always reads high, because it misses some of the fuel usage.

My fill process is to fill fast until it auto-stops, then round up to the nearest $0.50, so between 0 and 1/8 gal. added after it stops.

Overheating fuel pumps were a much bigger problem on older fuel injection systems.These older systems pushed a lot of fuel to the engine and the fuel pressure regulator at the injectors sent back the unused fuel to the tank.The fuel was going in a constant loop from tank to engine and back to tank.So running the tank below 1/4 full allowed the smaller amount of total fuel to get hotter.The engine became a heater for the fuel.Pumps did not like the extra heat and would fail prematurely because of it.Modern systems use one fuel line with no return loop.A pressure regulator is now contained as part of the in tank pump.With this design the fuel stays cooler and pump life is much improved.So while it is best to keep your tank filled the risk of pump damage is much less.

First, congrats on your new Hybrid Maverick!

The real question many will wonder, what is your MPG? While we like to see what the info screen says, we (I) am more interested in what real calculated MPGs are (ie miles driven divided by those 13.74 gallons)?

90% highway. 34 on the dealers tank. 38 so far on second tank with 140 miles in.

In South Africa. It is $4.85 a gallon. Then consider that the average South African earns about a 1/3rd to 1/2 the salary of the average American. So imagine paying $9.70 a gallon.

To make matters worse.... South Africa sells its gas to all its neighbors. And the price of gas in the neighboring countries is half the cost of the gas in SA.

What is the volume of 80 lb of gasoline at 0 deg vs 100 deg?

Am I the only one who ever gets a pump that shuts off after each gallon pumped?

Is that in Canadian or US dollars?

$6 Canadian is $4.75 USD

The filler neck going to the tank is Where the ”extra” fuel is. I don’t believe the filler neck is incuded in tank capacity. Depending on the vehicle, some of those filler necks can hold a gallon or more.

Ex fuel systems Engineer here. In the 80's your tank would have a gallon or more left depending on the tank size when you were on empty. It was designed that way. People always pushed it to the limit and if it said 0 and your car died people would get really upset. People figure 0 means close to 0. Cadillac owners didn't like to walk much.

I never let my tank get low but still waiting on my hybrid. $2.49 at Sam's Club and Costco now in Springfield, Missouri
I'm also from the Springfield Missouri area

The reason you get more fuel in tank vs tank capacity....13.8 gallon tank. Another 1/4 gallon the the fill tube, also there is fuel in the fuel lines. Could be close to 14 gallons by the time you run her completely dry depending on the fill up. Not all pump cut off the same. Some run slower allowing more to enter the tube.
