Hey everyone,

Bought a 2019 KZ 160rbt to tow around. I typically steal my dad's f250 to tow with but when he needs it I liked the idea of having the Maverick as a fallback, hence getting something so small.

I've towed many trailers and boats with other vehicles but when I pulled this with the Maverick I began to get dangerous sway over 50mph. This was a test drive unloaded with no fluids.

The dry weight of the trailer is 2,696lb and the tongue weight is right around 320lb.

My question is for anyone who has towed a camper with this rig if they had this issue as well and if there was a way you fixed it.

Also it looks very mixed as to whether a WDH would be good for the unibody of a Maverick. I see Ford doesn't say you can't but people say it's bad.....anyone install one with success?

(4k Ecoboost)

Thanks!

I have found that I may have a tiny bit of sway at high speeds towing my snowmobile trailer when unbalanced (is a little unsettling). Slippery mode does seem to help, but my fix has always to move some of the weight (the 1st sled) a little further forward (maybe 6 or so inches) since the majority of the weight of my sled is the 3 cyl turbo motor. My truck has 250 HP, my sled 200 HP. lol...

Yes, when packing you trailer with gear make sure to store it in the front of the trailer.
Yes a WDH works really well on the Maverick.

Figured I would ask the obvious, just so it can be ruled out... No clue how effective it is, but is this setting turned on?

This is a sure sign that there isn't enough weight on the front of the trailer

I've never had sway with mine ... full disclosure I also have a curt sway a way

EDIT - it's called the Curt sway control kit

I tow a camper that's usually around 2900 lbs loaded with a tongue weight around 390 lbs and I haven't had a problem with sway (no WDH). Total length is about 17' and height is only 7' so it's somewhat smaller than yours. I travel at 65 MPH but have had it briefly up to 75 MPH when situations required it. If you keep the loaded tongue weight in the 10-15% of total weight I wouldn't expect a problem. WDH with sway control will likely help, but you still shouldn't exceed the max tongue weight of 400 lbs, so adding a WDH will probably put you over the 400 lbs. Ford does not require or rule out a WDH on the Maverick. Ford does allow higher tongue weights on some vehicles when equipped with a WDH vs without a WDH, but not the Maverick.

Good point, the OP could add sway control without a WDH.

I have used both the friction and weight distribution styles of sway control, both are effective and either should solve your problem. I do prefer the weight distribution though.

I have used a friction sway control ant they work great. I had a problem towing a 22’ boat with my 68 F100 short bed At 45mph, with the friction 70-80 solid control.
