Yup, need the two keys to DIY. AI is incorrect (shocker!)

@Vegasbaby - my son-in-law got a used 2020 Explorer from the dealer with one key. I wouldn't buy a car with one, I'd make them create a new one so I'd have two, especially from a Ford dealer. I got spare fobs for my SIL and now he has to spend big bucks to get the second key so I can make spares.

Did "Vegasbaby" by his Maverick from a dealership?

I certainly wouldn't walk away from a truck I wanted because it only came with one key. Especially one as hot as a Maverick.
To me, it would be a point of negotiation. Not an ultimatum.

Unfortunately not a Ford Dealer.
Are those guys in the Home Depot parking lots with a van and a tent a viable alternative to the actual dealer? I’ve seen them a few times.

Yes. Costco also has the "Key" van in the parking lot/tent from time to time and they can cut/program the FOB for you.

Didn’t mean to hijack this thread.

I’m going in for my first Oil Change next week at 4400 miles 😵💫 (4% oil life left?) and was thinking I need a spare (drop) key. Was reading on here and this one was fresh so thought I’d chime in.

No, they can't program the Maverick key fob, I asked them already. I lost a key fob too and I' have to go to the dealership to get a replacement. On my current key fob I placed an Apple AirTag on my key ring so I can locate it.

(nice to see the OLM doing it's job on EB also - lots of towing or idling?) Not a hijack!

No fobs are programmed.
The vehicle is programmed to accept the transponder code in the fob.

If you had 2 good keys, and they could cut the key correctly - you could have programmed the truck yourself.

But ya for the price they probably charge - they won't have the scanner and skill to do the vehicle side if just 1 good fob.

Look for a coupon for a locksmith, or auto shop with means to program truck - maybe you'll get lucky and cheaper than dealership.

Mike,
If you only have one original key/FOB left and a locksmith or Ford has to reprogram the truck for the new key/Fob.
Will the Original key/FOB still fully function with the truck?

Yes - they get into the system and from the videos I've seen showing it done in Forscan - they clear out all the keys (since one is lost at this point), and add the 2 valid ones.
And why I'd feel uncomfortable doing it in Forscan.
That's when my adapter would select to lose connection and require a key cycle to reconnect.
Except no valid key...

I purchased one of these 12/24 for my 23 Maverick XL. Differnt vendor but same description (Maverik). Received it and it programmed fine. Used it for my main key for a while (maybe a month). It looks identical, although the plastic and button feel is cheaper feeling than OEM FOB. Then one time I went to take the key out it seemed "stuck" in the ignition. Odd since it worked perfectly until then. I carefully giggled the steering wheel and key and eventually got it out. Since then I used it as a hide a key. I've tried it since and it's worked fine. Probably just a burr on the key from cutting. No regrets buying, just be careful. Maybe rub with an emery cloth and spray with a lubricant before inserting the first time.
I use mine as a third key I have hidden it in the truck. It has always worked for me when needed. It's a comfort to know it's there and it saved a lot of money.
