Good day

It appears that someone may need to put an example of how to do an approximate calculation of fuel prices when comparing American gallon price to Canadian price per litre.

There is about 3.78 liters in an American gallon (isn't it cute, so small and fits in a smaller gas can!).

An Imperial gallon is 4.5 liters.. so much larger, and through the magic of math, helps make fuel mileage appear much larger/better...when it isn't.

;-)

So I will just use an arbitrary price on, oh, say
..9.00 an American gallon.

9÷3.78=2.38 per liter of fuel in American dollars.

I will use an average exchange rate of 1.3 CAD for every USD.

2.38×1.3=3.095 or 3.10 CAD for a liter to equal a 9.00 USD price point.

Edit

After re-reading, I realized maybe I should give the reverse calculation...how much is 1.75 CAD per liter in USD per gallon...so here goes.

1.75 CAD/Liter is 1.75×70% (which is the approximate exchange rate)=1.2253.78×3.78 (liters in a US gallon)=4.63 USD.

End of edit

I hope I have helped anyone trying to calculate the exchange rate/fuel price difference. And maybe even elicited a chuckle or two in the process.

Have a good day,

Andy

I posted and deleted a similar calculation. I assumed my horrible math skills got the calculation wrong. I just assumed there was no way Canadians were paying the equivalent of $9 a gallon!

I of course read your post, and was hoping no one was paying that much for gas, so far as I know!

And then had a bit of fun with it. I am sure many people have trouble when switching between different measurement systems, different gallon sizes and what have you.

I am still working on being able to understand what is good fuel mileage when using liters per 100 kms...but still need to convert to mpg to make sure...Imperial Gallons of course.

Have a good one,

Andy

I'm in New Zealand right now. Hold your hats. Gas is $3.20 a liter. That works out to around $12.13 per gallon. That is US gallons and dollars.

Sorry Maverick but for daily drivers you're my gas hog getting only in the 40s mpg. My 750 motorcycle, if I drive it easy gets over 70. Even if it is kinda chilly out.

We are up $! to $1.25 a gallon here in Western Washington. I'm with the OP though - fuel must be still too cheap for some folks - I live by a park and still see people sitting in their cars with the engines idling!

My wife and I saw lots of EV's and other fuel efficient vehicles when we visited Aukland in March of 2025 for a cruise...and some Rangers as well. They seem quite popular there.

The math really works when you have access to less expensive EV's and fuel prices are high to begin with, let alone the 3.20 per liter price you quoted!

I imagine 2nd hand electric vehicles here in North America will be quickly snapped up now as lease returns ramp up. If you can plug them in at home at night, you have it made.

Have a good one,

Andy

Well crap, should have gone and topped off the Mav on Friday, got unexpected errands and had to fill today at 1.65, would have waited until midweek otherwise.

That's what diesel costs here in inflationary Trumpars. $145 to fill up RV.
Over $600 to fuel up my RV as diesel prices in Florida reaches $5.799 per gallon good thing truckers get fuel surcharge payments or they’d be on strike and parking their rigs like in the old days but now they don’t feel the pain - trying to get fuel cost as a legit tax deduction I know it can be done…

This is an article from the local paper in Queensland New Zealand. They are talking about price per liter not gallons.
