On February 20, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued NHTSA Campaign Number: 26V104000: Trailer Lighting and Brakes May Not Function. Sounds scary, especially if the trailer brakes stop working on one of those Super Duty trucks rated to pull freight-train loads while it’s hauling down I-70 from the Eisenhower Pass.

I got my letter today in the mail. It’s a software update fix. The letter says the software is available.
So Ford claims software update available. Other message venue, like Motor Trend, saying a May update. And not sure update, download via WiFi or at dealer.

Could you post a copy of the letter? According to the NHTSA & Ford, they're 2 weeks out from sending the letter.

Googled it:
Key Details of NHTSA Campaign 26V104000:
  • Affected Vehicles: Select 2021–2026 Ford F-150, 2022–2026 Super Duty (F-250/350/450), 2022–2026 Maverick, 2022–2026 Expedition, 2022–2026 Lincoln Navigator, 2024–2026 Ranger, and 2026 E-Transit.
  • The Issue: The Integrated Trailer Module (ITRM) may lose communication with the vehicle when a trailer is connected. This can lead to a complete loss of trailer brake function and, or inoperative turn signals and brake lights.
  • Safety Risk: Inoperable trailer lights or brakes increase the risk of a crash due to reduced visibility and extended stopping distances.
  • Remedy: Ford will update the ITRM software for free via over-the-air (OTA) updates, or customers can visit a dealer.
  • Notification: Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed starting March 17, 2026.
  • Action Required: Owners should wait for notification or contact their local Ford/Lincoln dealer.

I actually had this happen last October. I was leaving for a long trip and had the idiot light come on. I shut the truck off, went and got my volt meter and when I returned and started it back up, all was fine. I haven't had the issue since but only used the trailer once since. It's good that an idiot light comes on and anyone who experiences it may want to shut the truck off when you can safely do so as opposed to just continuing on.

Got the letter Friday and scheduled the update online for tomorrow am. To my surprise, the dealer is sending the tech to my house for the update.
