Sorry that happened. Always a bummer. My previous truck was a bright red 2016 Tacoma. I had picked it up 3 weeks prior. I was stopped at a 4 way intersection in my home town (25 mph zone) Light snow. Stopped for the red light completely. Light went green. I looked both ways; nothing coming. As I moved to the intersection, a college kid cam barreling through the red light and slammed into the passenger door and rear panel. Almost $4500 in damage. Thankfully no fault for me and insurance covered it completely but still really disappointing.

Ouch. That sucks.

My buddy’s wife sideswiped someoneā€˜s car recently in traffic by not checking her blind spot.

This is her BMW X5:

It was totaled. Insurance paid out $40k.

This is the Range Rover she hit:

Payout on the Range Rover is unknown.

My buddy replaced the X5 with a new X7.
This is his monthly insurance bill before the accident, and after the accident with the new car:

I don’t understand how those insurance bastards can justify jacking up the rate like that as if you have never previously paid into the pot with your monthly premiums for years and possibly decades!

I know right, insurance seems to work backwards these days. No saving some of what you paid against a claim, all trying to claw it back after. It's getting to where it seems more worth it to do bare legal minimum then finance any repairs.

I feel your pain. I'm not 'old' by any stretch, but in my late 50s and I can attest that cognitive and motor skills decline are a reality. It's humbling. The struggle is real. I know that I'm not as aware, sharp and quick reacting as I was as a younger man. I can take comfort in that knowledge, accepting my limitations, is aiding my self preservation.

Well your candor is greatly appreciated. At least you didn't make some wild claim about the accelerator sticking, involuntarily plowing you into the parked car.

In our city you have to be within 12ā€ of the curb and the mini definitely is.
Yup. You're right. Legal. I'd be pretty nervous leaving my vehicle parked 12" from the curb with all the big rigs strolling the streets, but that's just me.

anytime I parallel park I make sure the rear tire touches the curb and the cut the wheel hard to the right and bring the front end to touch as well.

I’m thinking the door will need to be reskinned
I just sent the photos to a friend of mine that does PDR. He said he could get it to at least 80% as good as new for $1000. There's no torn metal and the creases can be coaxed back smooth. Might be an option to look into before you try a traditional repair at a body shop, who I'm sure would want to just replace everything except the interior of the door.

One advantage of buying a used vehicle; someone else has already gotten the first ding .
I bought my current Nissan Frontier with several shallow creases in the leading edge of the hood. Haven't bothered to get those PDR'ed.

The result was that I scraped a bollard that was just below my line of sight, and put a real, nice, long, indented scratch in the the side of my bed from just behind the cab, nearly to the tailgate. I should have just rented a car for that trip...
Did the same with my first F-150 which had a 7.5" lift. Was making a right turn in a parking garage and clipped the top of a bollard. Put a nice crease in the bedside about an inch below the existing body line.

I think insurance is helpful for catastrophic losses (like a total loss or nearly so, or a medical claim payout). Other than that, I just customer-pay because I'd rather not have a claim on record or pay more in increased premiums than the repair would've cost. For example, I have a $0 deductible on glass (literally costs me nothing extra), but I customer-paid for a new windshield.

Since the auto glass guy also saved time dealing with insurance claims and I agreed to cash-no-receipt, it was $180 OTD.

I recently backed into a parking garage wall. Broke the tail lamp and scuffed the black plastic bumper. I have spent the last two years avoiding parking lot dings then I did it to myself. Lucky no paint damage but a 400-dollar tail lamp will probably get my attention next time. Did you know there is a screen in the dash that shows the reverse view with lines...lol.

I’m embarrassed to say that I just sideswiped a parked car trying to park along the curb on my residential street to take a pic of the supermoon without wires in the way. I cut over too soon 😔

And this is why I have never owned a new car. I’m sick.

I haven’t had as much as a scratch on my cars that was my fault since the 70s.

Maybe it’s a sign of impending senility.

P.S. And the pic of the moon is lame…

I can't be the only one that read the thread title and thought, "that's awfully young to be driving a truck."

Maybe i am interpreting it wrong. :)

80% for $1k isn’t a good deal at all. Most PDR places don’t touch paint so OP would have to find someone else to do that on top of the fact it will still look jacked at 80%.

my PDR guy in Chicago did my teslas rear quartet panel for $700 and it was 100% minus to paint.

He under promises and overdelivers. This is also from a text of photos included rather than seeing it in person. I suggest looking at customer review photos whenever you look for a PDR place. When he did my F-250's bed, he said the same thing and I couldn't even tell where the dents were. The only time I could sort of tell is if the light caught it just right at sunset.
