For a 2025 Ford Maverick with a push-button start,
the backup key fob slot is located in the bottom of the center console storage compartment. This is a fail-safe feature designed to allow you to start your vehicle if the battery in your key fob dies.

How to use the backup key fob slot
  1. Open the center console and remove the rubber mat or cover from the bottom of the compartment.
  2. Locate the slot, which is a recess or outline specifically designed to hold the key fob.
  3. Place your key fob into the slot.
  4. With your foot on the brake, press the engine Start/Stop button as you normally would. The vehicle's system will then read the fob's chip and start the engine

Great info! i noticed our push button is not removable, in my old car you could pop the button out and use the standard key in place for an incident like this.

I give Dan some Praise!!! FINALLY someone - which I suspect is fairly new to the forum - is actually reading the owners manual instead of being lazy and putting no effort in trying to find the answer, but starts a thread wanting the answer given to them instead of say maybe using the Search feature or looking in the manual...

Thank you for your efforts Dan!!

Great information! This is exactly what happened to me just the other day and I wish I had known about this. Fortunately, there was just enough juice in our spare fob's battery to get me going.
Another method is to use your Ford Pass app to unlock and start the vehicle, but I don't know if it will drive without a functioning fob.

Yep.
For those who take the time to read, it's in the owners manual.

Really?........... interesting!!
Just thought of something? This may be unnecessary if you can start it with the Ford App on your phone? I'd like to verify that with the Ford techies.

The app can only do remote start, which is time limited. You still need the key to drive it.

It will start but it will not let you shift into drive.

I tried it, a few months ago. I left the fob in the house as a test. I unlocked & started the Maverick with the Ford app. I got in and tried to put it into drive. No go! I then used the app to shut off the Maverick. After everything was off, I opened the door & the horn alarm started beeping. I had to shut it off with the Ford app.

Yup, I believe it is for if the batt in the fob is dead, but maybe so is the batt in the cell phone, does ford app continue after warranty expires?

This won't cover the situations in which you need it.

This is necessary when the battery in the fob is dead (and perhaps other fob failure cases, idk).

If it's dead, it won't be detectable inside the cab to let you shift out of park!

hmm, I haven't checked and don't remember: does the app or display warn you that the battery in the fob is going low? I presume so, but . . .
