previous worst was 35, at 75-80mph across Wyoming.

achieved this big new personal worst, by strapping on a 16ft canoe and driving 75mph into a 20mph headwind..

Ford Maverick got my mpg down to 28.. maverick cano

didn't improve much when out of the headwind, went up to about 29-30mpg tho.
I've never noticed such a big drop from carrying this canoe on other cars. Calculating it as a percentage, about a 17% drop from going 35 to 30mpg.
On my old Sport Trac which got 19-20mpg usually, that is a drop to 17mpg.. so probably in the same ballpark really.

good trip, a week in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area..

Am not driving a hybrid, but try towing a decent size trailer and see where it goes. lol .... I drop down into the 13mpg (vs 28/29 without) range towing my snowmobile trailer. 91" high 91" wide and 13' long. When I bought it, I towed it home empty (from north central ME to central MA) with my Escape (same engine and transmission as the Mav) and that is what I got. Not driven it empty in the Mav, but get similar mpg towing it with two 4stroke sleds inside. .

I got 34.5 MPG on my hybrid while driving with my solo canoe. Almost the same as I get without it on the Mav.

good idea. was thinking of that on the last trip, it was startlingly busy in Knife Lake in early Sept.. but the drive from CO to MN is far enough, adding the border crossings etc makes it just too far..
we may have entered Canadian territorial waters on this trip, luckily the gunboats didn't show up.
