22 xl hybrid loaded with 330 board feet of hickory. 12’ long pieces, reported (by lumber guy) to weigh 1200lbs. I think it was less, but still one of the heaviest loads Ive carried! About 30 miles on rolling country roads, 20-45mph. I certainly felt the load, but the maverick did quite well.

I'm wondering if the lever effect of that hitch extender could potentially cause damage to the hitch with substantial weight that far out... I think those extenders are mainly meant for lightweight items like kayaks, canoes, PVC pipe, etc.

Glad that you got where you were going safely, but I'm not sure I'd try this feat myself 😄

Yes it definitely can and that’s why I opted not to get one of these

I have no idea what the true limit is but the class iii hitch on mavericks has a maximum tongue weight rating of either 200 or 400 lbs depending on whether you have the 4K Tow option or not.

A bed extender puts cantilever force on the hitch itself. Doing the math, a 4 ft bed extender quadruples the weight put on it as torque on the hitch itself. So even with the higher rated 4KT hitch you get 100 lbs before exceeding the rating and that just seems next to useless to me

though I do have this idea, you could probably mitigate this quite a bit by simply ratchet strapping the end of the extender back up to the bed…

1200 pounds, nah.
I’d guesstimate that was 600
Most of the squat was from fulcrum leverage.

I use a bed rack for 12ft material. works like a charm and doesn't hang 8 ft off the back! found a Thule used for 300 and I couldn't go without it
I had an Izuzu hombre (s-10) with a full ladder rack. 20’ trim no problem! But the bed extender is for occasional long loads now. No need for overhead racks. But I agree that they are very helpful. This particular load was too heavy for an overhead rack, though.

For sure! I would have put down an 8 ft base, and all the long stock up there on top of that, then taken the tailgate down half and ran the rest out of the back that way. I work in construction so I'm always having to do some kind of creative hauling. lol. My last vehicle was a honda element, I built a custom 6ft roof rack for that and you'd be shocked at the hillbilly stuff I did with that vehicle. it was the best!

Very good point. I’ll keep that in mind.

With 10 ft. lumber, I raised the tailgate and set the hitch extender's height accordingly. The front of the lumber is resting on one of the 2x inserts and tied down also.

Well, now we know! (That the bed extender can hack it.) I've only used mine to go up so the canoe is level with the roof rack. We need to get creative with that short bed.

whew, based on the pics, that's got a lot of squat in the rear. doesn't look like a lot of weight left on the front suspension? how was the steering and braking? that would have made me real nervous
